Anita moved to Pine Valley as a teenager with her family and quickly enrolled at Pine Valley High. There she caught the attention of Scott Chandler, who developed a crush on her. Anita only looked at Scott as a friend, though, as her eyes were on rebellious Bobby Warner. There was an instant attraction between the two and they began seeing each other. Anita's overprotective and conservative father, Hector, did not approve of Bobby and forbid his daughter from seeing him. Things got worse when Hector threatened to pull Anita out of Pine Valley High after discovering her teacher, Michael Delaney, was gay. Anita infuriated her father by testifying in court that Michael was an excellent teacher, and wasn't unfit to teach because he was gay.

Despite the constant threat of her father tearing them apart, Bobby and Anita began to fall in love. Anita was touched when she offered to have sex with Bobby, but he turned her down because he knew she wasn't ready. Soon after, Anita found out that Bobby had initially made a bet with Kevin Sheffield to see how long it took him to get her into bed. Furious with Bobby, she broke off with him. Bobby managed to convince Anita of his true feelings and the two reunited.

Anita had met and befriended pregnant teenager Kelsey Jefferson. Knowing her sister and brother-in-law, Maria and Edmund Grey, were struggling with fertility issues, Anita introduced them to Kelsey. Soon, Edmund, Maria and Kelsey were making plans to have the Greys adopt Kelsey's son, Sam. At the last minute Kelsey reneged on the deal and decided she wanted Sam to live with her. Kelsey dropped another bombshell on Anita: Bobby was Sam's father! Kelsey explained that she and Bobby had slept together one night in Chicago months earlier, before Anita had met Bobby. Once Anita found out that Bobby had known about Sam's true parentage for weeks she ended their relationship. Just as Bobby and Anita were making some headway towards getting back together, Anita was shocked to learn that Bobby and Kelsey had married! This only served to distance her further from him. Eventually Anita learned that Bobby had married Kelsey with the promise of half his trust fund in exchange for Kelsey signing over her parental rights and allowing Edmund and Maria to adopt Sam. Touched by his selfless act, Anita realized that she truly loved Bobby and they reunited. Bobby annulled his marriage to Kelsey and, thanks to some trickery, he walked away without giving Kelsey a dime. Bobby proposed to Anita and she accepted. The two left Pine Valley for Chicago, where they soon wed.

Anita returned to Pine Valley in 2004 to offer her support to Maria when Edmund was paralyzed. After initially clashing with Aidan Devane (Maria's former lover while she was an amnesiac), the two developed a friendship. Bobby returned to Pine Valley in an attempt to reconcile with Anita (the two had separated when Anita discovered Bobby had slept with a co-worker, Tracy). Anita, despite her love for Bobby, let him know that she might never be able to trust him again. The strain between them grew when Anita found out Bobby had secretly housed Erica Kane in Las Vegas, despite the latter's family looking for her. Bobby apologized to Anita and they reconciled.

Anita's friendship with Aidan deepened, but neither would voice the unspoken attraction between them. Anita had high hopes for her future with Bobby, as they made plans to buy a house. Anita was dealt a blow when she learned that Bobby accepted money from Kendall Hart to seduce Greenlee Lavery. Despite Bobby's insistence he was blackmailed, Anita was hurt because he wasn't honest with her. An angry Bobby accused Anita of harboring feelings for Aidan and leading him on. Bobby and Anita began divorce proceedings, but Anita was disturbed by Bobby's accusations about Aidan. Aidan assured Anita she never led him on, but admitted that he did have feelings for her. The two have begun dating as Anita awaits her divorce to be finalized.
