Shortly after Danielle was born to police officers Derek and Mimi Reed she was kidnapped by a woman named Grace Keefer. Grace, deranged with grief after Mimi shot her son Tony during a robbery, eventually gave back the child. When Danielle's parents divorced a few years later, she left Pine Valley with her mother, but still visited with Derek on holidays, vacations and the like.

Danielle returned to Pine Valley in 2004, a runaway, and encountered Reggie Montgomery in the park. Lying to Reggie that she had an abusive home life, Reggie took her in and hid her in his sister Greenlee's apartment (Greenlee being out of town). An attraction was evident between the two, and Danielle managed to get Reggie to smile following the (apparent) death of his cousin Bianca's baby. When Reggie mentioned the animosity that existed between he and Derek Frye (Danielle hadn't made contact with Derek since returning to Pine Valley), Danielle kept her last name quiet.

Derek discovered Danielle had returned to town and wasn't thrilled that she had taken up with Reggie Montgomery. As Danielle and Reggie began to get serious with each other, Derek grudgingly consented to their dating.
