Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Edmund Grey arrived in Pine Valley in 1992 to cover an in-progress murder trial. He began a relationship with the Editor-in-Chief of Tempo magazine, Brooke English. There was no love lost between Edmund and the wealthy Dimitri Marick, whom he had grown up with on the Wildwind Estate. Dimitri's wife, Angelique was the object of desire for both Edmund and Dimitri during their childhood. Edmund grew up with the Greshams, servants of the Maricks, in the gardener's quarters at Wildwind. Edmund and Dimitri competed over everything when they were children. Edmund and his mother, Flora, were beaten by his (adoptive) father, Alfred, when Edmund was a boy.

Although Edmund was haunted with painful memories while visiting Wildwind, he refused to leave Angelique in her time of need (she had been in a coma for years and was slowly recovering). At the time, Dimitri began secretly cheating on Angelique with Erica Kane. This angered Helga, Angelique's mother, and prompted her to reveal to Edmund that he was the youngest son of Hugo Marick (who had slept with the hired help, Flora). Helga finally revealed that Hugo's will stated that Edmund was entitled to half of the Marick estate in hopes that Edmund would take Angelique and Helga under his care.

This information fueled Edmund to reveal to Dimitri that they were half-brothers, but Dimitri denied the claim. Dimitri had only seen his father as a good man, always giving Dimitri the world. Now he was faced with the knowledge that Hugo had cheated on Dimitri's mother, and denied his other child real love and acceptance. In addition, Dimitri refused to give up his home to his childhood arch-rival. Edmund's life was in turmoil, which provided its fair share of problems in his and Brooke's engagement. Edmund became obsessed with claiming his birthright and gaining acceptance from those who spurned him his entire life. Brooke eventually felt shut out of his life.

Edmund took Dimitri to court to prove that he was Hugo's son - by getting an injunction to exhume Hugo's body for DNA testing. Edmund won the case, but Hugo's remains were missing. Believing that Dimitri kidnapped Hugo's remains, Edmund set off for Budapest after Dimitri and Erica. During this crusade, Edmund kidnapped Erica to try and force Dimitri to recognize him as his brother (after a while, Erica willingly played along with Edmund's kidnapping scheme to force Dimitri to prove his love for her and "rescue" her). Eventually, Dimitri gave into Edmund's demands and accepted him as his brother.

Edmund moved into Wildwind, of which he now was sole owner. Dimitri and Edmund began forming a strong brotherly bond. With Brooke now married to Tad, the father of her child, Edmund turned to sexy neurologist Maria Santos.

Edmund continued to help Brooke every time she needed a shoulder to cry on, which made Maria cautious, as well as jealous. Eventually Edmund realized that he was truly in love with Maria and wanted to marry her. Maria was still wary and insecure regarding Edmund's feelings for Brooke, but she soon saw that Edmund was over his past love and that he was head-over-heels in love with her.

After they were married, Edmund and Maria became intent on starting a family. Del Henry, an ex-boyfriend of Maria's showed up in town and reminded Maria of the baby that she miscarried eight years earlier-his baby. Maria soon realized that she had fertility problems because of that miscarriage and blamed herself for now not being able to have Edmund's children. During this, Edmund ran for Congress and started his political campaign. On Election Day, a picture of a close moment between Maria and Del (she was saying goodbye to him) showed up on the front page of the paper. Edmund blamed losing the race on Maria and her "affair," which only escalated their problems. After months of separation, Maria and Edmund reconciled. Edmund began investigating his opponents' connection to the mob, which almost got him killed. His near death experience prompted Maria and Edmund to start anew by renewing their wedding vows.

Having briefly contemplated adoption, Maria and Edmund decided on in-vitro fertilization. Unfortunately for the happy couple, it never worked. Edmund took over the reigns of Tempo Magazine from Brooke and became Editor-in-Chief. At Wildwind, Maria and Erica began to clash while living together. Maria's frustration over not being able to conceive made her irritable with the often self-centered Ms. Kane. During Maria and Edmund's failed attempts at getting pregnant, Edmund wrote articles about the couples attempt to get pregnant. Maria found out (at first thinking Erica leaked the story to the press) and was mortified that her husband was revealing their most intimate secrets to the world via his magazine. Later, Edmund and Maria patched things up once again.

Edmund and Maria befriended teenager Kelsey Jefferson, and offered to adopt her son once he was born. At the time, Kelsey agreed, but while living at Wildwind, Kelsey quickly developed a crush/borderline obsession with Edmund and wanted him to turn away from Maria and be with her. Edmund gently turned her down. Kelsey gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Samuel and gave him to the Greys. After some time (and still within the legal time period) Kelsey decided that she wanted her child back and gained a court order to do so. Maria was hysterical, having become attached to a child she felt was rightfully hers, and decided to leave town with Sammy. Before she could get away, Edmund took Sammy from her in the airport, leaving Maria alone, heartbroken and angry. That same night Dimitri (heartbroken over a seeming betrayal by Erica) consoled Maria by making love to her.

During the time when Maria was without Sammy, she harbored feelings of disgust towards Edmund. They worked through it and began to move on. Kelsey realized, soon after, that she couldn't raise a baby, and so she decided to give Sammy back to his two parents. Edmund and Maria were thrilled to finally be parents. However, Maria soon found out that she was in fact pregnant and feared that her secret affair with Dimitri was back to haunt her. Edmund was over the moon with joy, but Maria was convinced she was carrying his brother's baby.

Maria had made it very clear to Dimitri that he was to not be a part of the baby's life. The child would be born under the pretense that it was Edmund's. Dimitri was upset, but understood the position they had put themselves in. Meanwhile, Edmund began working closely with editorial assistant, Skye Chandler. Skye, who became infatuated with Edmund, found out about Dimitri and Maria's one night stand and later switched the DNA to show that Dimitri was the father of Maria's baby, hoping Edmund would then turn to her.

Edmund eventually realized that the child Maria was carrying was not his, after Maria ordered blood tests (fearing that the baby would have a blood disease of which Dimitri was a carrier). Edmund, furious with Maria, left Wildwind, once again feeling as though Dimitri had taken what was his. Soon after he left, Edmund decided that he wanted to raise the baby that "should" have been his. Erica became suspicious of Edmund and Dimitri's relationship, after Edmund refused to visit his brother in the hospital. At this time, Erica was pursuing adoption for herself and Dimitri, and Edmund used Dimitri and Erica's blissful state of marriage to his advantage: Edmund forced Dimitri not to claim Maria's child as his own, and to be nothing more than a distant uncle to it. Dimitri agreed. Unable to deny their love, Edmund and Maria reconciled.

In the winter of 1997, Erica trapped a pregnant Maria in a cabin and forced her to confess to her affair with Dimitri. The encounter induced Maria into labor, and given a horrendous ice storm, the two women were trapped, forcing Erica to deliver Maria's baby. Erica successfully saw Maria through her labor, but needed to bring the premature baby to the hospital. Erica took the baby and realized on the way to the hospital that she never told Maria the sex of the baby. The doctors had previously informed Maria that she would be having a boy, but the child was actually a baby girl. On the way to the hospital, Erica's car hit an embankment and the baby was presumed to have drowned in the lake.

For a while, Maria refused to give up hope, because their baby was never found. Edmund and Maria eventually accepted the death of their child and grieved. Maria blamed Erica for killing her child, and then herself for having committed adultery. Skye decided to remain silent about the baby's true paternity, and stood by Edmund in his time of need. Erica left town for a bit and returned with a newly adopted baby, named Sonya, in tow.

After months of a complicated ruse, Edmund, Maria and other denizens of Pine Valley pieced together that Erica stole Maria's baby girl after getting into the car accident. Edmund and Maria finally got their daughter back and renamed her Madeline.

During Erica's trial, Edmund, Maria, Brooke and baby Maddie left for New York on a Tempo business trip. Edmund and Maria were looking forward to a happy future with their children. On the way back, Maria gave her seat on the plane to Brooke so Edmund and Brooke could continue working on an article. Guilty, defeated Skye wrote the Greys a note explaining Maddie's paternity, but before anyone discovered the letter in Maddie's diaper bag, the plane took a nosedive. Maria was unable to escape the crash and was presumed dead.

Edmund was devastated; the only way he could go on living was to remind himself that his children needed him. Maria's death affected Dimitri profoundly as well. Now that Maria was gone, Dimitri felt he should raise his own daughter. Dimitri sued for custody of Maddie, and the judge ruled in his favor. Erica, however, had found out that Edmund was the real father and revealed the truth. Likewise, Skye confessed that she had switched the paternity results. Before the court order could be overturned, Dimitri fled to Hungary with Maddie. Edmund and Tad (who disliked Dimitri for stealing his girlfriend Gloria) dressed up as women to sneak into Budapest and bring Maddie home. Edmund convinced Dimitri's (then) wife, Gloria, to run a DNA test at a nearby hospital. Gloria went behind Dimitri's back and brought Maddie to the hospital, where she found out that Maddie was indeed Edmund's. Maddie finally came back to Pine Valley with her father. Dimitri was heartbroken and furious with Edmund.

Edmund began throwing the Crystal Ball, a New Year's charity ball commemorating the life of his late wife, Maria. Edmund and Tad set up a test for Dimitri and invited him to the ball. Dimitri, toting a gun, fired shots at his own brother, having blamed him for stealing everything good in his life. Prior to the ball, Edmund and Tad replaced the bullets in the gun with blanks. Edmund began telling people that his brother was dead to him.

A few days later, Edmund found Dimitri wounded in the Wildwind mausoleum and saved his brother. Their feud was far from over, but Edmund proved once again that loyalty and family meant something to him.

Edmund and the rest of the town soon realized that Jim Thomasen, a passenger on that same flight Maria died on, was responsible for the plane going down. Edmund vowed to avenge Maria's murder, but Jim gained the upper hand, kidnapped Edmund and brought him to a sewer, where Dimitri ended up saving Edmund's life.

Edmund and Dimitri started to patch up their relationship once again. Having overcome so many obstacles, Edmund felt ready for a relationship with Christine "Kit" Montgomery. Edmund stood by Kit during her rape and pending trial. Edmund completely believed that Kit had correctly identified her rapist (Ryan Lavery) and almost led a lynch mob trying to prove it. In the end, it was discovered that Kit was raped by Ryan's brother Braden. Having turned so many lives upside down, Kit left town.

Edmund was shocked when a woman named Alexandra Marick arrived in town claiming to be Dimitri's widow. Dimitri had been in Europe for many months, where Alexandra revealed they had met, married--and Dimitri had died from a neurological illness. Edmund had difficulty processing this information, and believed Alexandra killed Dimitri to get his assets. After some investigating, Edmund discovered that Alexandra was legit and had treated Dimitri for his illness shortly before he died. Putting their animosity behind them, Edmund and Alexandra fell in love and became engaged.

Alex began having strange memories and began feeling like she was losing her mind. Edmund helped Alex deal with her memory gaps. It turned out that Alex, the twin sister of spy Anna Devane, had been programmed to annihilate her sister and fill her role for secret intelligence agencies, if called to do so. Dimitri (who had not died, but rather gone into hiding to treat his illness) resurfaced as Alexandra learned more about her past. Despite her feelings for Edmund, Alexandra returned to her husband.

Edmund and Brooke began dating again. The two were cautious about getting involved with each other again, but ultimately realized that friends can be lovers. The two were engaged and were making wedding preparations when Brooke discovered a huge secret: Maria wasn't dead after all. She was suffering from amnesia and living in Nevada. Brooke chose to remain silent, and married Edmund. Her guilt overwhelming her, Brooke confessed everything to Edmund after the wedding. Furious, Edmund had the marriage annulled and tracked down Maria. Unfortunately, Maria could not remember her life with Edmund despite her best attempts to do so. Desperate, Edmund locked her in a Wildwind bedroom and tried an experimental drug on her so that she could regain her memory, but it didn't work. Furious, Maria distanced herself from Edmund and began a relationship with Aidan Devane. Edmund was forced to come to terms with losing his wife, and initialized a formal divorce.

Edmund began writing an article on cosmetics company Fusion, which brought him in contact with Mia Saunders. They began dating and grew close. After Maddie witnessed a shooting, Edmund had to save his daughter by entrusting Maddie with Aidan and Maria, while Edmund tried to lure the shooter out of hiding. The traumatic events triggered Maria's memory. Realizing how much she loved Edmund, Maria ended things with Aidan and told Edmund the good news. They consummated their relationship that same night. Edmund gently broke off with Mia.

Edmund and Maria had a small ceremony where they remarried. Edmund began helping Juan Pablo Vasquez deal with the looming threat of an Argentinean gang, the Calatravas, who wanted Pablo dead. In a confrontation with the Calatravas, Edmund was shot. After touch and go surgery, Edmund learned he was paralyzed. He discovered that high risk surgery could restore use of his legs, but such surgery could be fatal. Maria, fearful of losing her husband, clashed with Edmund's determination to have the surgery. Edmund was determined and Maria eventually accepted his decision. The surgery proved unsuccessful and Edmund learned he would likely be paralyzed for life.

Edmund struggled to deal with his new condition, which resulted in some cold and distant behavior. Edmund and Maria's marriage became strained. Maria began spending more time with newcomer Zach Slater, which raised Edmund's suspicions. Edmund overheard a conversation between Maria and Zach, and learned that Maria had a relationship with him during her amnesiac years. Edmund was upset with Maria for keeping this from him, but Maria swore nothing was going on with Zach and she was planning on ending contact with him.

Soon after, Erica told Edmund that she had witnessed Maria and Zach in a close moment. Edmund was furious with his wife for her continued association with Zach, and that she lied about it. With months of distance between them, Edmund initiated divorce proceedings. Maria promised to fight Edmund, declaring that she still loved him. Edmund began to get back some feelings in his legs, but kept this from Maria. When she accidentally discovered this, she was hurt, but nonetheless determined to save her marriage.
