Maggie came to Pine Valley because she wanted to uncover the truth behind her twin sister Frankie's murder. While Maggie was looking into Frankie's murder, her aunt Vanessa drugged her, held her captive, and admitted to killing Frankie. In the end, Maggie was rescued by her cousins, Dr. David Hayward and Leo du Pres, after Vanessa left her to freeze to death.

Maggie immediately grew close with cousin David, who did his best to fill the fatherly role in Maggie's life. David's wife, Anna, also grew close to Maggie. While David housed Maggie and sent her to school, he also inspired Maggie to become a doctor just like him. And as David went through the loss of his brother and child, Maggie was there to support him in return.

Maggie quickly formed a friendship with Bianca Montgomery. Bianca and Frankie had been on their way to a romantic relationship when Frankie was killed. Bianca was immediately attracted to Maggie, and hoped she would be open to a relationship. Maggie cared for Bianca as a friend, but was unsure if she wanted that to translate into a relationship. Maggie was attracted to men, but felt close with Bianca. Eventually, Maggie told Bianca that she was not gay, but that she'd always be Bianca's friend.

In college, Maggie met fellow pre-med student Henry Chin in science class. The two were immediately attracted to each other, but Henry was under the impression that Maggie was involved with Bianca. After Maggie explained that she was straight, Henry and Maggie began seeing each other, much to his overbearing mother's chagrin (Henry's mom wanted Henry to be single, to allow him more time to focus on his studies). Maggie and Henry fell in love and lost their virginity to each other. During their relationship, Maggie discovered that Henry had a passion for music, especially the guitar. She encouraged him to pursue his talent; she even made a tape and had it played at an Amateur Night. Unfortunately, Henry's mother disapproved of his dream to be a musician and further pushed him to become a doctor and to avoid Maggie. During a final exam, Henry felt so much pressure, his mind went blank and he cheated off Maggie, with Maggie's consent. The professor accused Maggie of cheating and Henry refused to confess, not wanting to ruin his future career. Maggie, meanwhile, faced expulsion because everyone believed she had copied off of Henry's paper. Maggie broke up with Henry after this betrayal. In an effort to win her back, Henry finally confessed but Maggie wouldn't reconcile. Henry eventually left town to pursue a music career, and he and Maggie parted friends.

Maggie was the first person to whom Bianca admitted being raped. Maggie was the first to know about Bianca's pregnancy, as well as being one of the first to know that Bianca planned on keeping the child. When Michael Cambias (who had raped Bianca) avoided punishment, Maggie bought a gun and planned to kill him. As she stood outside Michael's condo, she saw two mysterious figures dragging a large bag from Michael's condo, causing Maggie to flee (it would later turn out this was Bianca's sister and cousin, disposing of Michael's body).

Maggie found herself growing more uncomfortable and jealous of Bianca's relationship with Lena Kundera. As Bianca made plans to leave the country, Maggie impulsively kissed her. Maggie covered and claimed the kiss was friendly, but she remained jealous of Lena and Bianca's closeness. Perhaps in an effort to avoid her feelings she began casually sleeping with Jamie Martin and the two moved in together as "friends with benefits." Maggie's feelings for Bianca deepened. She still liked guys, but her feelings for Bianca went beyond friendship. In a moment of raw honesty, Maggie admitted to Bianca that she loved her. A flabbergasted Bianca reminded Maggie she was dating Lena, but promised to support Maggie as she came to terms with her sexuality. Maggie felt uncomfortable and embarrassed around Bianca after her confession.

Maggie met Jonathan Lavery and the two started dating. Still vulnerable and attracted to Bianca, Maggie told Bianca that her romantic feelings were a result of temporary confusion and she was back to dating men. Bianca and Jonathan did not get along, especially after Jonathan burned the shirt that Bianca had given birth in (her daughter, Miranda, was presumed dead) in an effort to prevent Ethan Ramsey from getting DNA to prove he was a Cambias. Maggie discovered this and lied to Bianca that Jonathan didn't burn it. Bianca learned the truth and was furious with Maggie for lying. Despite her guilt over her actions towards Bianca, Maggie and Jonathan grew closer and he confessed his love.

Bianca fell off a balcony and slipped into a coma. Maggie didn't learn for days because a jealous Jonathan kept the information from her. Maggie rushed to the hospital to be at her friend's side, where she was overjoyed to see Bianca awake from her coma and be reunited with Miranda (who had not died after all). A furious Maggie confronted Jonathan on keeping the information about Bianca from her. In the middle of the fight, Jonathan hit her.
