Myrtle first came to Pine Valley in 1976 having been hired by Phoebe Tyler to prevent her son Lincoln from remarrying Kitty Shea, whom Phoebe found to be a less than desirable match. Phoebe paid Myrtle, an alcoholic, to pose as Kitty's long lost mother, Lucy Carpenter. Phoebe's intention was to have Myrtle, as Lucy, insist that Kitty come and live with her and hopefully split Linc and Kitty apart. Myrtle contacted Kitty, who gladly went to reunite with her supposed mother. Over time, Myrtle began to care deeply for Kitty. However, Mona Kane, who had known the real Lucy Carpenter, met Myrtle and forced her-and Phoebe-to call off the scheme. Myrtle had her friend Nigel Fargate tell Kitty that "Lucy Carpenter" died from an apparent heart attack. Kitty was devastated.
Kitty eventually found out the truth about the scheme and tracked down Myrtle, who admitted her role but told Kitty that she had come to love her like a daughter. Kitty forgave Myrtle, and Myrtle was there when Kitty died after a long illness. Nigel asked Myrtle to marry him and she agreed.
After Nigel's death, Myrtle moved back to Pine Valley and opened a boarding house. She brought with her a surprise---during her time away she had met a woman named Kelly Cole, Kitty's twin sister! Just as she had with Kitty, Myrtle took on a mothering role with Kelly. Myrtle and Mona Kane also became close friends. Upon Mona's death in 1994, Myrtle became a surrogate mother to Mona's daughter Erica, as well as surrogate grandmother to Erica's daughter Bianca.
Langley Wallingford came to town in 1979 determined to marry Phoebe Tyler and get her money. Myrtle recognized Langley from her days in the traveling carnival, when he was known as Lenny Wlasuk. Realizing he was up to no good, Myrtle threatened to tell Phoebe, but Langley managed to convince her that he really loved Phoebe-which he did.
Myrtle took in a mysterious boarder around Christmas of 1996. His name was Red Kilgren and he was convinced he was Santa Claus! Myrtle was disbelieving, but grew to care deeply for Red. Red was suffering from partial amnesia, and Myrtle managed to reunite Red with his wife before Christmas, and she started to wonder if perhaps Red was really Santa Claus.
In 1999, psychotherapist Rae Cummings was searching for her birth mother. Myrtle was unnerved by this, as she had given up a baby years earlier. Myrtle soon learned that Rae was the daughter she had given up! Rae was angry with Myrtle at first, but eventually grew to have a loving relationship with her.
Myrtle remains a friendly face for all those in Pine Valley. She deeply loves her friend and surrogate family and is always available for sage advice or an amusing story from her "carny" days.
