Ray MacDonnell joined the cast of All My Children in 1970, at its inception, as Dr. Joe Martin and celebrated his 35th anniversary on January 5, 2005. Dr. Joe remains one of Pine Valley's most upstanding citizens, along with his wife, Ruth. As former chief of staff at Pine Valley Hospital, Dr. Joe's opinion is valued by all.

Mr. MacDonnell was born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and went to nearby Amherst College. He attended the Royal Academy in London as a Fulbright scholar.

He appeared as the popular character Philip Capice on The Edge of Night for nearly eight years. Mr. MacDonnell's other television credits include Studio One and Armstrong Circle Theatre. He starred on Broadway in Mame, with both Angela Lansbury and Ann Miller, and in numerous off-Broadway productions.

In 2004 Mr. MacDonnell received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He resides in New York with his wife, Patricia, and is the father of three children.
