Stuart Chandler is the twin brother of powerful magnate Adam Chandler. Stuart is the exact opposite of Adam, kind and understanding where Adam is ruthless and quick to judge. Some may describe Stuart as "slow" and while his vision of the world may seem simplistic, he is actually one of the wisest Pine Valley denizens in matters of the heart.
Stuart accompanied Adam to town when Adam arrived in late 1983. Stuart's wife, Joanna, was a longtime friend of Adam's first wife Althea. Joanna and Adam felt that it was best to keep Stuart secluded in the Chandler Mansion, as Stuart was carrying a vendetta against Palmer Cortlandt, whom he blamed for the long ago death of his sister Lottie. Meanwhile, Adam had married Erica Kane, which had Joanna seeing red. Having had a longstanding affair with Adam, Joanna wanted Erica out of the picture, and she convinced the impressionable Stuart that Erica was evil, hoping that Stuart would eventually harm Erica. When Joanna's manipulative presence was revealed, she and Stuart divorced. Stuart also learned that Palmer was not responsible for Lottie's death, and as his anger quelled his interaction with the outside world increased. Stuart began to paint more and eventually opened an art gallery.
Stuart met kind Cindy Parker, who had left an abusive ex-husband. Stuart fell in love with Cindy, and took on a paternal role with her young son Scott. Cindy soon learned that she had AIDS, but it did not deter Stuart's love for her. The two married and Stuart formally adopted Scott. Unfortunately, their happiness was short lived when Cindy succumbed to the virus.
Stuart missed Cindy deeply, but became smitten when he met nurse Gloria Marsh a few years later. Stuart began to court Gloria and the two were engaged. However, Adam also found Gloria irresistible and seduced her, with Gloria eventually marrying Adam. Stuart briefly dated Esther Glynn, the mentally challenged woman that Erica had hired to care for baby Maddie Grey, but the romance fizzled.
Marian Colby had mistaken Stuart for Adam one night and seduced him, her intent being to gain some leverage against Adam in her daughter Liza's divorce hearing. When Marian learned that she actually slept with Stuart, the two began to date. They fell in love, despite Adam's protestations, and were eventually married.
Adam did his best to destroy the relationship and set it up to appear as if Marian was having an affair. Stuart discovered Adam's scheme and went off into the night, upset. He was struck by Arlene Vaughan while she was drunk driving, but circumstances led everyone to believe he had died in a cabin fire. Esther discovered an amnesiac Stuart and led him to believe that they had a life together. Stuart eventually began to piece portions of his past back together, and headed to Pine Valley, where he encountered Arlene. Realizing her role in keeping Stuart from his family, Arlene manipulated Stuart into going into the Chandler attic, where she locked him. However, when Adam was injured at a construction site and was near death, Arlene's guilt prompted her to release Stuart, whose presence helped Adam recover.
Stuart is one of the kindest members of the Pine Valley community, and is always willing to dispense words of comfort and support.
