This sometime cop and sometime barkeep carries himself with an air of authority that befits the long arm of the law. But his momentarily empty arms belie a man of great passion.
Mac reconciled with his estranged brother, Robert, in 1991.
When Robert left Port Charles on a suicide mission to save wife Anna, he left in Mac's care their daughter, Robin, whom Mac raised.
In 1993, Mac proposed to - and almost married - Felicia Jones.
Mac became involved with schemer Katherine Bell in 1995.
A year later, Mac became the police commissioner of Port Charles.
After Katherine was shot, she ended her relationship with Mac.
Mac Scorpio is the original good guy. Like his predecessor in Port Charles, his late brother, Robert Scorpio, Mac may have a dark side, but his sense of right day in and day out is what comes to light. He's not just there for the people he loves when they love him back, he's there for them for good. Even when he's at odds with his niece and charge, Robert's daughter, Robin... even after his romantic relationship with Felicia Jones ended... they know in their hearts, and so does he, that he always is in their corner.
In 1991, Mac's first order of business in Port Charles was to clear up some old business. Robert bore him a grudge because he believed that Mac had left him and their parents to die in the Australian desert after a plane crash. That wasn't the case, Mac explained - he had gone for help! At last, the Scorpio brothers were reunited.
After becoming involved with dangerous Leopold Taub's temporarily deaf, beautiful wife, Dominique, Mac opened a nightclub, The Outback. In 1992, when Robert left Port Charles in search of his kidnapped wife, Robin's mother, Anna, he left Robin in Mac's care. Platonically cohabiting, Mac and Robert's second wife, Holly Sutton, became like surrogate parents to Robin - which so annoyed Dominique that she ended her relationship with Mac.
That same year, Mac hired amnesiac Felicia to work at The Outback. Together, they went on the run from her demented ex-beau, Dr. Ryan Chamberlain. By the time the nutcase was apprehended, Felicia had regained her memory and fallen in love with her savior. In 1993, Mac allowed Felicia to work with him at his detective agency, and they made plans to wed.
It was never meant to be. On what was to have been the most special day of their lives, Ryan showed up with a bomb. Ultimately, no harm was done, but Felicia and Mac didn't exchange vows - ever. Before they could reschedule their nuptials, Felicia's daughter, Maxie, came down with deadly Kawasaki syndrome. When Mac saw Felicia with Maxie's father, Frisco Jones, he knew that their relationship was over.
In 1995, Mac commiserated with schemer Katherine Bell over his fears for Robin, whose involvement with street punk Stone Cates left her HIV-positive. Against all odds, straight arrow Mac and conniving Katherine became an item; he saw right through her games and liked the woman he saw when he did.
All the same, after Mac became police commissioner in 1996, his relationship with Katherine began deteriorating. As good a heart as she had, she was interested in position and prestige, and Mac just wasn't. Their love withstood the return of Mac's long-lost "friend," Miranda Jameson, but after Katherine was shot and paralyzed, they came to the conclusion that their affair just didn't have legs.
In 1997, Mac and Felicia were working together as private investigators and their latest case involved helping a woman named Tess track down her deadbeat husband James, who looked exactly like Mac. Mac and Felicia, however, did not realize that Tess and James were in cahoots. Tess and James tricked Mac and Felicia into believing that James was dead. Tess and James then subdued Mac and while Tess kept him prisoner, James assumed Mac's life in Port Charles. Even Felicia fell for James's act, although she was starting to become suspicious. Meanwhile, Tess lead Mac to believe that she had imprisoned him as a substitute for her "dead" husband James. In the end, Mac and Felicia, with some help from V, were able to beat James and Tess at their own game.
In 1998, Mac and Felicia planned on getting married in a double ceremony with Lucy Coe and Kevin Collins, but secretly agreed to back out at the last minute. When the time came, however, Mac and Felicia realized they really did love each other and they were married.
Mac and Felicia were happily married and Mac loved being a father to Felicia's daughters, Maxie and Georgie. Mac, however, wasn't pleased by the amount of time Felicia was spending with Luke. Felicia told Mac that she was just helping Luke come to terms with Lucky's death and Mac accepted this.
Mac rescued Felicia and Luke when Faison held them hostage and became more and more resentful of Felicia and Luke's close friendship. Mac then came to believe that Luke and Felicia were having an affair after Faison arranged for a surveillance tape of Luke and Felicia together to be sent to Mac.
Mac finally had been pushed to the edge when Felicia went with Luke to help him find Lucky. He filed for divorce and was so hurt and angry he filed for custody of Georgie and Maxie. But he still found himself in love with Felicia and tried to give her another chance. But when Felicia was forced to take the stand in Luke's murder trial and admit she had spent the night with Luke, therefore giving him an alibi, Mac was devastated. Afterwards Felicia took the girls to Texas for awhile to give her and Mac some space.
Mac became involved with mobster Sorel's murder. Felicia was back in town by then and she helped him with the case. All the suspects and Mac and Felicia all gathered to find out who was responsible for the murder, and it turned out to be Sorel's own daughter Angel.
Felicia started up a relationship with Roy who started to get caught up in the mob. She asked Mac to trace a briefcase of cash that was in Roy's apartment.
One night Maxie was babysitting for Lulu and due to her neglect, a fire was started in the house. Mac reprimanded Maxie, but it turned out the fire had been set deliberately. When Laura's step father, Rick Webber was found dead, Mac figured out it was a set up. Eventually Mac arrested Luke for the murder.
Mac was again called to investigate the murder of Luis Alcazar. Mac arrested Jason after AJ claimed he saw Jason driving Alcazar's limo that night. Then Skye said she saw Alcazar being pushed off the balcony. Then Mac thought all clues led to Brenda and Jason as the suspects. But Mac believed they were innocent and agreed to help Felicia clear them of the charges. The murdered turned out to be Alexis Davis.
Mac had his hands full when Felicia left him with two teenage daughters to take care of. Both Maxie and Georgie each experienced teenage growing pains that Mac was forced to deal with. When Mac investigated a porn site featuring kids from Port Charles High, he discovered a film of Maxie having sex on the internet. Maxie also almost died of a drug overdose.
Georgie was not much easier to deal with. She fell in love with Dillon Quartermaine and even attempted to run away. But Mac got to their hotel room just in time to keep them from having sex. He told Georgie that her boyfriend was a bad influence on her and he forbade her to see Dillon. Of course this didn't last long.
Maxie then befriended Zander Smith who was on the run from the law. When Mac went to look for Zander in the basement of the Port Charles Hotel, a fire began and Mac was burnt severely. Maxie immediately went to Mac and told him the truth about her friendship with Zander.
Tracy Quartermaine was worried that the Scorpio family was going to sue to Quartermaine's for negligence in the Port Charles Hotel fire. Georgie and Maxie saw right threw Tracy.
Because Mac was unable to care for the girls anymore due to his condition, Felicia came back to Port Charles. They all stayed together by Mac's bed side.
A strange thing happened when Mac's body disappeared from the hospital. He was found at Mercy Hospital with a John Doe name tag. It turned out that Zander was in fact alive and posing as Mac in the hospital bed.
Ultimately Mac was released from the hospital and recovered fully from his wounds. He and Felicia are beginning to rekindle their romance.
