Raised by the family of his late father, Stavros Cassadine, to hate all things Spencer, this haunted teenager has been torn from the moment he set foot in Port Charles between what he was taught and what he feels - love for his mother, Laura Spencer, and his half-sister, Lesley Lu.
When Nikolas arrived in Port Charles in 1996, his bone marrow saved the life of his half-sister, Lesley Lu.
As Nikolas said good-bye to Lulu before leaving town, he encountered his half-brother, Lucky, and in their scuffle, Nikolas fell down a flight of stairs and almost was killed!
After Nikolas' mother, Laura, was given an ultimatum by her husband, Luke Spencer, she deserted Nikolas for a second time.
Nikolas developed a crush on older woman Katherine Bell after she arrived unannounced on Spoon Island to scout locations for a photo shoot.
In 1997, Nikolas became the victim of mob violence when he was shot outside of Luke's.
In 1998, Nikolas was devastated when Katherine died and he blamed Luke.
After being left behind by his mother, Laura Spencer, to be brought up by his uncle, Stefan, Nikolas Cassadine came to despise the woman who gave him life. Even after they were reunited, he swore to himself that she would never have his trust. But he soon learned the hard way that even his devoted uncle had tricks up his sleeve. The only person on whom Nikolas truly could rely was himself.
In 1996, Nikolas showed up in Port Charles with Stefan and proceeded to make life exceedingly uncomfortable for his mother, Laura. She never had told her husband and true love, Luke Spencer, that while she was a prisoner on the Cassadines' island in Greece, she had borne her captor-husband, Stavros, a son - Nikolas, who now was Luke and Laura's only hope to save their beloved daughter, Lesley Lu, who needed a bone marrow transplant to survive.
Nikolas fell in love with his sweet half-sister, Lulu, at first sight, and he was glad to be able to help her. But his relationship with his mother remained strained. He desperately wanted to be able to reach out to her, but her abandonment haunted him.
After Nikolas and Laura reached an understanding, Luke forced her to choose between Lulu and Lucky, her children with him, and Nikolas. Unable to turn her back on her family, Laura told Nikolas that again, she must desert him.
This, coupled with Nikolas's newly-gained knowledge of his clan's involvement in the supposed death of his grandmother, Lesley Webber, prompted Nikolas to leave Port Charles. But first, he wanted to say good-bye to his sister. Stealing into the Spencers' home, Nikolas crept up to Lulu's room, where he was found by Lucky, Luke and Laura's hot-tempered teenage son. A scuffle ensued, and in it, Nikolas was nearly killed when he fell down a flight of stairs.
More than ever, Laura knew that the Spencers and the Cassadines never could coexist peacefully in the same town. But Stefan had an ace up his sleeve - the fate of General Hospital. He gave Laura a choice: Invite him and Nikolas to remain in Port Charles, or see the hospital shut down. Laura had no choice but to allow the Cassadines to stay.
All the while, Nikolas has enjoyed a close relationship with Nurse Bobbie Jones, who at first was merely a friend and who then became his uncle's wife. That friendship ended after he had learned about her betrayal to Stefan. Nikolas became smitten with Katherine Bell when she visited his Spoon Island home looking for locations to shoot ads for Deception.
After Laura was presumed killed in an explosion in 1996, Nikolas ran to Katherine. Although he put on a show of indifference - and pulled the older woman into a passionate kiss - he was deeply affected by his mother's "death." Her return to the living was just another in a long line of betrayals at the hand of his elders. It won't be the last. Nikolas remains unaware of his family's deepest and darkest secret - his Uncle Stefan may not be his Uncle at all. Stefan could be his father! After Katherine was found shot at Wyndmere, Nikolas was quick to point the finger at Luke. He eventually learned that it was Stefan who shot her and that put a temporary strain on their relationship.
Nikolas and Lucky competed for the affections of Audrey's granddaughter, Sarah Webber and he won her heart. Nikolas became the victim of mob violence when he was shot by Jason's enemies in front of Luke's. Jason and Luke helped save Nikolas's life and rushed him to General Hospital. Nikolas pulled through, but the shooting wound up giving Nikolas Broca's Aphasia which prevented Nikolas from speaking properly. News of his condition made Nikolas shut down and put a strain on his relationship with Sarah.
Tyler Christopher (Nikolas Cassadine) Nikolas soon found another foe to deal with in his grandmother Helena. Realizing that Nikolas was the heir apparent, Helena saw her grandson as the key to her plan to take over the Cassadine family. Helena immediately began to use Nikolas's speech problems as a way to manipulate Stefan and Katherine's relationship and to get closer to Nikolas. However, her plan to win over Nikolas failed and he remained wary of his dangerous grandmother. Helena sent Stefan and Katherine various gifts that were designed to trigger Stefan's memories of Laura when she was on the Cassadine island in Greece. Eventually, Nikolas began to wonder if Stefan was indeed obsessed with Laura.
Robin developed a special bond with Nikolas when she helped him with his speech problem. Robin's reading of a letter from Laura tapped into Nikolas's deep emotional need to talk about his mother and it made him speak in complete sentences and cured his speech problem. As Nikolas's attraction to Robin grew, he and Sarah were unable to recapture the romantic sparks that they had once shared.
Stefan did not want Nikolas involved with Robin because of the bitter feud that had existed between the Scorpios and the Cassadines and her association with Jason Morgan. After Robin got back together with Jason, she and Nikolas remained good friends.
Nikolas was devastated when Katherine died from a fall off a parapet at Wyndemere and blamed Luke for causing her death. As it turned out, Katherine hadn't died in the fall and had been kept hidden away by Helena while she made a full recovery. Katherine continued to strengthen her friendship with Nikolas and it was clear she had a hidden agenda of her own. Katherine and Nikolas grew closer while working on a charity fundraiser for General Hospital and eventually became lovers.
One night, Katherine remembered everything about her fall and realized that Stefan was Nikolas' father. After overhearing a conversation between Katherine and Helena, Nikolas accused Katherine of using him to get back at Stefan. Katherine defended herself and ended up telling Nikolas the truth about his paternity. Nikolas was crushed and confronted both Stefan and Laura. Nikolas soon reconciled with Stefan and Laura and was genuinely glad that Stefan was his father.
By this time, Nikolas and Lucky had truly become friends and both agreed not to get caught up in the never-ending feud between the Spencers and the Cassadines. Stefan and Laura were both displeased when Nikolas resumed his affair with Katherine and they were horrified when Nikolas announced he was going to marry Katherine because she was pregnant with his child. Katherine wasn't really pregnant at all, but used this ploy to get Nikolas to propose.
On the night of their wedding was supposed to take place, Katherine was pushed from the parapet at Wyndemere and this time, she stayed dead. Nikolas first suspected Laura of killing Katherine, but then learned the truth about all of Katherine's manipulations, including the fact that she hadn't been pregnant.
Nikolas was consumed with grief when he thought Lucky had died in the fire. Nikolas found himself growing more and more attracted to Liz, but knew her heart would always belong to Lucky.
When Nikolas learned that Lucky was really alive, he and Liz sent off for New York City to try and track him down. Liz and Nikolas returned to Port Charles, where they eventually encountered Lucky.
Nikolas was shocked by Lucky's new attitude and couldn't understand why Lucky was pushing him towards Liz. Nikolas did have feelings for Liz, but knew in his heart that Liz only loved Lucky. Several months later, Nikolas, Liz and Lucky realized that Lucky had been brainwashed by Helena.
Nikolas, Lucky and Liz teamed up over the summer to help Emily during her blackmailing ordeal and subsequent kidnapping. In the process, Nikolas met Gia Campbell, the young girl who was blackmailing Emily. Gia wasn't bad at heart and was soon helping Nikolas and Lucky catch the real criminals.
Nikolas and Gia became roommates at the cottage and appear to being growing closer every day.
Gia came to Port Charles as a rough edged blackmailer, but when she moved in with Nikolas, he got to see a softer side to her, and their relationship blossomed into romance.
Nikolas partnered with Elizabeth and Luke to bring down Helena for putting Lucky under mind control. In order to be completely convincing to Helena, Nikolas broke up with Gia to become a "true Cassadine". He also had Lucky's love for Elizabeth stripped from his memory and claimed to be in love with Elizabeth himself.
Nikolas soon discovered that Helena had cryogenically frozen Nikolas' father, Stavros Cassadine. But ultimately Stavros was defeated by Luke and he was never to return again.
Nikolas proposed marriage to Gia, and she accepted. When Nikolas' uncle Stefan threw them an engagement party, Nikolas met his recently discovered Aunt Kristina, Alexis's sister. Nikolas also learned that Stefan would be leaving town and Nikolas would now be running the Cassadine Empire. So, Gia and Nikolas soon moved into Wyndemere.
Nikolas was terrified of becoming like his father and was unsure about his new position as head of the family.
When Gia ran down Courtney Matthews with her car after having a few drinks, Nikolas covered up for his fiancé. Elizabeth was with Gia during her accident, but did not remember what had happened. So, when Elizabeth's memory came back she was angry with Nikolas and Gia for lying. Eventually Courtney dropped the charges.
Gia became bored with her new life as the fiancé of a prince and decided she wanted to pursue modeling. Nikolas wanted to encourage her, but she became angry when Nikolas had paid for her to be a cover girl. She then decided to go to law school to become a lawyer and went to work for Alexis. But the straw that broke the camel's back was her friendship with Zander Smith. Nikolas became jealous and tried to pay him to leave town. When Gia found this out, she had it and they broke off their engagement.
Nikolas was concerned with his mother's safety because Luke became obsessed with visiting her in the mental institution causing her condition to worsen. Nikolas kept her location hidden from Luke, which made him angrier. He even went so far as to hire a woman, Summer who resembled Laura to befriend Luke with the hopes of preoccupying him. He blackmailed by telling her he would help her find her long lost brother. But the brother ended up being her ex boyfriend who was looking for the Cassadine coins. Summer went on an adventure with Nikolas, Luke, and Lucky to find the coins.
When Emily Quartermaine came back to Port Charles suffering from breast cancer, she asked her friend Nikolas to help her convince her boyfriend Zander they were in love. She was trying to protect Zander from experiencing the devastating loss she believed he would go through when she died. They even got engaged. Nikolas' Uncle Stefan was not thrilled at the prospect of Nikolas marrying Emily so he brought Lydia Karenin, an old friend of Nikolas' to town. Because the Cassadine's were suffering financially Stefan wanted Nikolas to marry into Lydia's wealthy family. In Lydia's grandfather's will, it said she had to marry Nikolas in order for her to inherit his fortune. But Nikolas' engagement to Emily hindered Stefan's plan, but when he attempted to kill her, he pushed Summer off the Wyndemere cliff by mistake.
Nikolas was very supportive of Emily's battle with cancer. He encouraged her to go to survivor group meetings which helped her finally tell Zander the truth about her illness, which led to Zander and Emily reuniting. But Nikolas and Emily could not deny that their friendship had turned into romance. But Nikolas felt an obligation to his family and planned to marry Lydia. Once they were married, Nikolas learned of a new clause in Lydia's grandfather's will, they had to have a child within 5 years.
Lydia finally got a confession on tape of Stefan admitting to killing Summer. He was arrested and angry at Nikolas for not helping him.
Mostly out of guilt Emily married Zander. But Nikolas and Emily could not deny their true feelings and one night alone in the cottage, they gave in to their passion and almost made love for the first time, but decided to stop. Unfortunately it was caught on tape and Lydia went to Zander with the information.
Nikolas had borrowed money from Lorenzo Alcazar to pay off his family's debts. Stefan was not happy when he found this out especially when he found out Nikolas borrowed money from Jason Morgan to pay off his debt to Alcazar.
Nikolas divorced Lydia to be with Emily who also divorced Zander. Nikolas was devastated when Stefan was murdered. He declared the Cassadine/Spencer war over at Stefan's memorial service.
When both Nikolas and Zander decided to fight for Emily, she couldn't take the pressure anymore and told them she was going to be alone for awhile. But after a Halloween party, Nikolas and Emily ended up back at the cottage and could not hold back any longer, they finally made love for the first time. At that point, they both knew they were meant to be with each other.
With both their families struggling financially, Emily and Nikolas were excited to learn there was a treasure on a sunken Quartermaine ship. What they didn't know was that the Cassadines also had right to the treasure. Emily and Nikolas told their respective families they would split the money between the Cassadines and the Quartermaines. But the night of the Port Charles Hotel fire, the treasure was stolen and neither of the families was able to get a hold of the treasure.
One night while Nikolas was driving, he got into a bad car accident. Mary Bishop found Nikolas on her doorstep soon realizing he did not remember who he was. Mary was recovering from losing her husband Connor in the war, so when Nikolas showed up she convinced herself that Connor had returned. She told Nikolas he was Connor and that he was a deserter in the military and he had lost his memory. Nikolas believed what Mary told him and assumed the role of Mary's husband. He even started to develop real feelings for her. Meanwhile, Emily was devastated thinking that Nikolas had been killed.
Coincidentally Mary and Nikolas and Lucky and Elizabeth all vacationed at the same spot. Emily was shocked to find Nikolas well and alive, but he only knew Emily as Mary's friend at the hospital.
Lorenzo Alcazar took a liking to Nikolas as Connor and offered him small jobs. He knew the truth about what Mary was doing with him and used it to his advantage with her.
But Mary could not keep Nikolas in the dark forever, and Emily encouraged her new "friend" Nikolas to undergo hypnosis to get his memory back. He soon began to get glimpses of memory back, including the Port Charles Hotel fire.
Emily and Nikolas quickly became close friends and Nikolas could not deny he felt a connection to Emily. They ended up making love but he quickly felt guilty when he found out Mary had almost gotten herself killed. Emily confided in Nikolas about her "dead" fiancé Nikolas Cassadine and how lost she felt without him.
Mary knew that Nikolas was closing in on the truth and asked Alcazar to create a fake dossier on Nikolas.
When he overheard Mary and Emily referring to him as Nikolas, he figured out that he had been lied to and he was in fact Nikolas Cassadine. When Nikolas asked Alcazar about it, Alcazar had his and Mary's version of the truth, that he does know Emily, she had a crush on him forever. Nikolas finally learned the truth that he and Emily were once in love and engaged.
