Lindsay Rappaport's life might have seemed idyllic, with her successful husband Sam and two healthy children Will and Jennifer. However, it was anything but. Lindsay constantly wanted more out of life-particularly things of the material kind. After a brief affair with Sam's law partner, Lindsay and Sam divorced.

Lindsay followed her ex-husband to Llanview in 1998, where she was not pleased to meet Nora Buchanan. Nora was Sam's college sweetheart and he had carried a torch for her ever since. Jealous, Lindsay and Nora became immediate enemies.

Lindsay met Clint Buchanan and the two hit it off. The two began spending more time together and soon got married. When Will confided in her that he got Jessica Buchanan pregnant, Lindsay advised him to keep quiet, then offered Jessica money to leave town and marry her boyfriend Cristian. Lindsay kept the truth from Clint, who was furious that Lindsay would try to get his daughter out of town in an effort to keep control over her own son's life. Clint and Lindsay divorced.

Bo and Nora were trying to have a baby when a malicious Lindsay came across Bo's sperm count report. She altered it, making it appear as if Bo had a lower than average sperm count. Desperately wanting to get pregnant, Nora tried to get Sam to be a sperm donor and eventually had a one night stand with him. Lindsay discovered the truth and revealed it, leaving Bo devastated. Lindsay comforted Bo and the two grew close, eventually making love. When Nora gave birth to a son, Matthew, Bo demanded a DNA test to determine whether or not it was possible he was the father. Fearful of losing him, Lindsay paid the lab technician $500,000 to alter the results (if necessary) to make sure Sam was the father. Lindsay then paid the lab technician to leave town, Due to a series of miscommunications, the technician left and Lindsay never found out whether he altered the test. Sam was eventually identified as Matthew's father, but whether this was the actual result or doctored one was unknown.

Lindsay was arrested for hitting Jessica Buchanan with a car, which resulted in the death of her daughter, Megan. Dorian Lord had actually hit Jessica and fled, but circumstantial evidence and the actual switch of Dorian and Lindsay's cell phones led her to be fingered. Lindsay was arrested and the trial was set. Bo remained a rock of support throughout the ordeal and told Lindsay he loved her.

Dorian was correctly fingered for the crime, but Lindsay faced a new crisis when Bo came across a surveillance tape of Lindsay talking with the lab technician. In a corner, Lindsay admitted she had Matthew's paternity test fixed to favor Sam-but lied and said she never succeeded.. Bo told Lindsay that they were over. Eventually Bo forgave her and the two reunited. Bo proposed and Lindsay found out she was pregnant. Just as she and Bo were to marry, Nora interrupted the wedding with a newly learned bombshell-Lindsay had changed Bo's original sperm count test! Bo was disgusted with another example of Lindsay's lies and dumped her. Soon after Lindsay miscarried the baby and blamed Nora.

Lindsay attempted to win Bo back, but he wanted nothing to do with her. Nora, along with several other Llanview residents, was involved in a train wreck. Nora was found by Dr. Colin MacIver (Lindsay's ex brother-in-law) and rushed to a non-Llanview hospital. Bo, Sam and others all believed Nora to be dead when her body couldn't be found. In the hospital, a critically injured Nora called out Lindsay's name and Colin called Lindsay in hopes of identifying Nora. Fearful that Nora's return could ruin any chance of reuniting with Bo, Lindsay paid Colin to care for Nora at his home and tell no one she was alive. Colin agreed, but a recovering Nora soon realized she had been kidnapped. Desperate, Lindsay injected Nora with a drug that wiped out her memory (as to not incriminate Lindsay).

Meanwhile, Lindsay's sister Melanie began to develop feelings for Bo, who returned them. Furious, Lindsay faked to Melanie that the loss of Bo was driving her to insanity. Guilt ridden and not wanting to provoke her sister, Melanie cooled things with Bo. However, Bo and Melanie couldn't resist each other, leading Lindsay to sever all ties with Melanie. As an amnesiac Nora tried to prove Lindsay was behind her kidnapping, Lindsay paid Colin blackmail money to keep quiet about the kidnapping. When Colin was murdered, Lindsay was a suspect after having publicly threatened him. Lindsay was cleared when Nora was revealed as the culprit.

Lindsay's daughter Jen came to town and began dating Cristian Vega. Feeling Cristian was inappropriate for her, Lindsay did everything in her power to break them up, including setting up a hidden camera in Cristian's apartment to make it appear as if Cristian had set up a website for voyeurs. When that didn't work, Lindsay made it appear as if Cristian was double crossing his boss, RJ. Angered, RJ sent a hit man after Cristian-which put Jen in danger. After Jen spent one night with Al Holden, Lindsay altered a pregnancy test to make it appear as if Jen was pregnant by him, to further keep her away from Cristian. The truth was eventually revealed and Jen and Cristian reunited.

Troy MacIver, Colin's twin, came to town and began to fall in love with Nora. Like Nora, he believed Lindsay was responsible for Nora's kidnapping and her memory wipe and wanted to see her punished. Troy pretended to fall in love with Lindsay and proposed to her-while taping all their conversations. Not able to get a confession out of her the standard way, Troy began to impersonate Colin and "haunt" Lindsay into confessing. Finally Lindsay confessed and Troy revealed himself as Colin. He told Lindsay he had tape recorded everything. Desperate, Lindsay knocked him out and kept him prisoner in a local funhouse while she tried to find the tape. Nora found it first and Lindsay was arrested. After an attempt to fake insanity, she was sent to prison.

In Statesville, Allison Perkins was Lindsay's cellmate. The two managed to escape together, but Allison ended up kidnapping Lindsay and holding her hostage along with Viki Davidson (in her Niki Smith persona) and the governor's granddaughter. In the police's rescue attempt, Lindsay saved the governor's granddaughter from a fatal gunshot, resulting in the governor granting her a full pardon!

Lindsay re-entered Llanview society with revenge in mind. Lindsay investigated Troy's past and learned that his ex-wife, Joanna, had died in circumstances that made Troy look possibly guilty (in reality, she had accidentally killed herself after a fight with Troy). Troy began sleeping with Lindsay to keep her quiet (he feared Nora finding out the truth) and soon the two couldn't resist each other-sexually speaking. Nora caught the two in bed together and broke it off with Troy. Troy rejected Lindsay and spiraled out of control. Desperate and vulnerable, Lindsay was convinced by Mitch Laurence to kill Troy---but she accidentally shot and killed Sam instead. Completely unraveled, Lindsay was declared insane at the time of the shooting and sent to a mental institution. Lindsay escaped and a deranged Troy had her drugged and kept in another mental institution, with plans to have her disappear forever. Thanks to Jen and Joey Buchanan, Lindsay was rescued and eventually released back into society.

Lindsay began casually dating D.A. Daniel Colson while attempting to build a stronger relationship with Jen. However, Lindsay soon began an affair with Rex Balsom, her ex son-in-law. The affair quickly put an end to her relationship with Daniel Colson, and was a final straw in her shaky relationship with her daughter. Rex proved he had little loyalty to Lindsay when he agreed to help RJ steal some of expensive art pieces from her in an attempt to get back ownership of Ultra Violet. The heist went awry, but their affair had fizzled out.

Her fling with Rex came back to haunt Lindsay, when Paul Cramer stole a sex tape from Rex and posted it on the internet. Lindsay was humiliated, and when Paul Cramer later turned up dead she was on the list of suspects. Lindsay claimed she was innocent of the crime, but worried Jen might be guilty. Lindsay received support in her friendship with RJ Gannon and the pair tentatively began a romance.
