"I didn't risk Ojai Foods to make money, Kevin. I did it to try and save my life. I want out. I want to be free."

  • Robert McCallister
    to Kevin

"If you really believe that me and my ilk are ruining the country, now's your chance to do something about it. Get in the game. Change my mind. Argue with me. Either that, or you can spend the next forty years sniping at me from across the dinner table."

CHARACTER BIO

We doubt Kevin Walker, the fourth child to Nora and William, would have ever predicted the career path he’d be led down in recent years.

When we first met him, Kevin was a very successful lawyer who often counseled his family in legal matters.

Kevin came out his senior year in high school. His conservative dad, William, had trouble accepting that one of his sons could be gay. Of course, Nora rallied to Kevin's side and was very supportive. Arguments and conflicts aside, Kevin has always remained close to his family.

Kevin's love life has had its share of turmoil. After failed relationships with TV soap star Chad Barry and Senator Robert McCallister's minister-brother, Jason, Kevin fell in love with his former boyfriend Scotty Wandell. The two got married in a tear-filled ceremony at Nora’s house with Kitty Walker officiating.

Soon after he was passed on for partner at his prestigious LA law firm—Kevin decided to leave the practice and take over his sister Kitty’s job as Robert’s communications director. A staunch liberal democrat, Kevin is constantly at odds with Robert—a fact that Robert appreciates as an asset. Kevin truly believes that by “crossing the aisle” and working with a party that stands in opposition to so many of his own ideals, that he might make a difference in the world. Though their friendship was tenuous at first, Kevin and Robert have come to respect each other—especially after Kevin witnessed Robert having a heart attack.

Some time ago Kevin agreed to be the sperm donor for his brother Tommy’s child when Tommy proved infertile. Tommy’s daughter Elizabeth was born healthy, but she later had medical complications and Kevin donated part of his liver to save her life. Through the incident Kevin found himself more attached to Elizabeth though he agreed that it would be best if Tommy continued to act as the child’s father. After Tommy fled the United States to Mexico following legal troubles, Elizabeth moved with her mother, Julia, to Seattle. Kevin stays in touch with Elizabeth even though Tommy is no longer living with her.

After seeing how attached Kevin had become to Elizabeth, Scotty told Kevin that he believes he would make a great father someday. Whether the two will start a family of their own remains to be seen...

ACTOR BIO

We’re happy this Welsh performer left his home country—where he worked steadily for many years—to settle in the States and take on the role of Kevin Walker on ABC’s Brothers And Sisters.

Matthew Rhys was born and raised in the historic city of Cardiff, South Wales. He was educated in the Welsh language, which remains his first language. At seventeen, after playing the lead role of Elvis in a school musical, Rhys realized that a career in farming or in the armed forces was not for him. As a result, he applied to and was accepted at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London (RADA). Shortly thereafter, in 1993, he was awarded the Patricia Rothermere Scholarship. During his time at RADA, Rhys appeared in Back-Up, the BBC police series about the operational support units Hooli Vans, as well as in House of America. He then returned to Cardiff to act in his own language in the Welsh film "Bydd yn Wrol (Be Brave)," for which he won Best Actor at the Welsh BAFTA's.

In January 1998, Rhys went to New Zealand to star in Green Stone, a colonial costume drama for television. He then landed a role in Julie Taymor's critically acclaimed adaptation of Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange. Next he played Ray in Peter Hewitt's quirky film comedy, Whatever Happened to Harold Smith? After returning to Wales, he did two consecutive films with Jonathan Price—"The Testimony of Taliesin Jones," a film about a dysfunctional single-parent family in which he played the elder son, and Sara Sugarman's extraordinary comedy "Very Annie Mary," in which he played the role of Nob.

In 2000 Rhys played the lead role in Metropolis, a drama series for Granada about the lives of six twenty-somethings living in London. Next he starred in "Peaches," the film of the celebrated play written and directed by Nick Grosso. Rhys opened to huge critical acclaim when he starred as Benjamin in the 2000 world premiere of the stage adaptation of  "The Graduate," alongside Kathleen Turner at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End.

Rhys traveled to Ireland to star in the 17th century swashbuckling adventure, "The Abduction Club." He played the lead role of Darren Daniels in "Tabloid," and then returned to New Zealand to shoot the epic drama Lost World for the BBC. His other film credits include the independent horror film "Deathwatch" in Prague and Fakers for director Richard Janes. He also starred opposite Brittany Murphy in the independent feature "Love and Other Disasters," and in "Virgin Territory," opposite Hayden Christensen, Tim Roth and Mischa Barton.

Though widely acknowledged as one of the UK's most exciting young actors, Rhys is quite adamant that he could happily give it all up to play international rugby for his country.
