It was quite the experience for me to suddenly jump back into songwriting after 20 years. It's one of those things I have a great love for yet somehow let slip away just in the course of living. So when I looked at my airline ticket and saw I was flying to Nashville, I thought, "Wow, maybe it's a country singer and maybe I'll get to write some music. But when the writer, Justin Zimmer, showed up at the door, suddenly my heart lept. I thought, "Jeez Nia, be careful what you wish for." Writing a song in 20 minutes in front of cameras is intense pressure. But all that process did was confirm that I should be writing again. It was as if no time had passed at all. I was back home.
I loved the song so much that when I returned to Malibu, I had my son, Chris Hayzel, produce the tracks for me. THAT was a most profound experience. As a mom, you try to raise your children to have faith in themselves and their unique gifts as well as the courage to honor that. For me to be an artist, in his hands, allowing him to completely arrange the song, play every instrument, harmonize with me and guide my vocals not only gave me a clear appreciation for how capable he is as an artist and a young man but also brought me back to a faith in myself and my own unique gifts.
Life is so good. Thank you ABC.
