Week 8 – The Quarter Finals

The Final Five. After this, there's two more weeks, and that's it. And to build the pressure, now each team has to dance two dances. Two long dances. So how'd they do?

The first half of the evening was the Ballroom round, with each team dancing a dance they had yet to perform. It had been awhile since we'd seen Ballroom dances, and some of the stars really shined tonight. Mya & Dmitry led things off with a near-perfect Quickstep, earning a 9 from Carrie Ann and 10s from Len and Bruno. And Kelly reminded everyone how graceful she can be with a smooth, confident, and complicated Foxtrot. Donny also received lots of judge love for his Viennese Waltz.

The second half was the Latin round, kicked off by a demonstration trio of dances by pros Mark Ballas and Tony Dovolani, accompanied by four additional professionals.

Each pair had randomly drawn an era to dance to: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, or "the future." Their challenge was to incorporate appropriate era moves and feelings into classic Latin dances.

Mya & Dmitry took the floor first with a '70s Samba to Donna Summer's Bad Girls. It was the highlight of the night, and perhaps one of the highlights of the whole season, earning the first perfect score of 30—three 10s—in the entire competition.  Aaron & Karina's '90s Samba impressed as well, showing off the former child performer's boy band moves. And Joanna & Derek, resplendent in robotic silver, brought a futuristic take to the Paso Doble that brought the house down, earning a 9 and two 10s.

With a 59, Mya's way on top this week. But Aaron, Joanna, Kelly, and Donny all nearly tied with scores from 50-52... so your votes will be making a pretty big decision tomorrow.

Also on tomorrow's results show: Michael Bublé, Susan Boyle, and the performance of your custom made "Design a Dance"—Sabrina Bryan with your selected Pro Dancer, doing the Paso Doble to Eye of the Tiger, in a the viewer designed costumes that you voted for.

Top Three Scores

Mya & Dmitry (Quickstep: 29) + ('70s Samba: 30) = 59
Joanna & Derek (Quickstep: 23) + (Future Paso Doble: 29) = 52
Kelly & Louis (Foxtrot: 25) + ('60s Jive: 26) = 51

Highlights of the night:

Mya & Dmitry. Their Quickstep was graceful, quick, light, and meticulous. But they really outdid themselves with their '70s Samba, a prefectly crafted era homage yet still a classic Samba, earning the highest score of the entire season.

The period costumes. Not altogether "beautiful," but it'll take us a while to forget the image of Joanna & Derek all silvered up, Kelly in a neon green bob, Dmitry with a fro for the ages, and Donny & Kim's campy Adam Ant/halloween/"insane" outfit.

Comments from He Said/She Said

"Once again, Mr. Osmond proves to be a real showman. I think his ability to poke fun at himself really helps, and I agree with Kym that his dedication is a HUGE asset. This was definitely one of the better waltzes we've seen. Carrie Ann just called him mesmerizing. Donny could win this whole thing, right??! I love it that sis Marie is in the audience." -- Karl

"Tonight, Len is in love with Mya, he just can't get enough. And forget about Bruno, he's lost it - lol! Mya again worked it tonight with her samba. Carrie Ann said she was beyond belief, Len said her hips were hypnotic and Bruno said she was unbelievable. A perfect score of 30 - holler! Dmitry was looking hot with his sexy mustache, right ladies?!" -- Meg

  • Yes, that's Donny Osmond channeling his inner-Jack Sparrow. Why? Well, in Season 9, he and Kym Johnson performed their '80s Paso Doble to "You Spin Me Round Like A Record" by Dead or Alive. The judges must not have been impressed with the look or the dance, as the pair earned a 24, the lowest of all the teams in the Latin round.
  • We were perplexed too. Seriously, what this look was about?! During Week 8 of Season 9, the pairs were tasked with performing a Latin dance based on a specific decade. In this pic, Derek Hough and Joanna Krupa did a futuristic Paso Doble. Though the costumes may be odd, the performance was spot-on as the couple earned 29 out of 30. Still not sure Derek needed all that eyeliner though.
  • Yes, that's Donny Osmond channeling Johnny Depp, or rather a pirate. Why?
