Week 5 – Hairstyles by Fellini:

Big hair and big scores tonight. No one scored lower than 21. The celebrities definitely brought their "A" game to dance the intense and passionate Paso Doble and Argentine Tango. Melissa's partner Mark was fighting off a cold, and Joanna's partner Derek had to be replaced mid-week because he caught the flu. Those challenges, combined with the pressure for a lot of the stars to make up for some harsh scores last week, set the stage for tonight's drama.

Mya impressed again and scored three 9's. Mark & Lacey brought the ballroom to their feet with their highest scoring dance so far: their Paso Doble. Channeling passion while performing very deliberate and powerful dance moves brought out the best of last week's lowest scorers: Michael, Louie, and Aaron all earned solidly higher scores from the judges than in their previous outings. The theme from the Judges' table all night was "Finally!"

Maksim Chmerkovskiy had to step in early in the rehearsal week to replace Derek Hough who got the flu, which threw a wrench into things. But Maks and Joanna clicked and, although she stumbled in performance, Joanna performed a solid Argentine Tango. And Kelly Osbourne danced a spectacular Paso Doble to her father's classic hit "Crazy Train," with Ozzy proudly in the audience.

The night ended with the stars and pros all performing their first group dance—The Hustle. After a hard week of rehearsing their Latin competition dances, they got a chance to shake their booties! The fun the celebrities and pros alike had, disco dancing in their polyester best, was intoxicating.

And we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Lacey's and Samantha's hair, which Tom referred to as "hairstyles by Fellini." Then there was Kelly's gravity defying poof, and Mark's amazing disco wig, and tonight goes down as a special night in hair history.

Top Three Scores

Donny & Kym (Argentine Tango): 29
Mya & Dmitry (Argentine Tango): 27
Mark & Lacey (Paso Doble): 26

Highlight of the night:

Donny Osmond's Argentine Tango. This was a side of Donny we hadn't seen yet, and one which Kym wasn't sure she'd be able to get out of him. Serious, passionate, in control... As Carrie Ann put it, "it was so darn sexy."  Len called it "truly your best dance."  Bruno loved this brooding, moody, dangerous and sharp side of Donny Osmond.  Impressive enough to score a 9 and two 10s!

Comments from He Said/She Said

Meg and Karl were away from the computer tonight, but the commenters had plenty to say...

"I think Len took a happy pill before the show. I don't think there has been a bad dance tonight. My only problem with this season is I think they've been really tough on the iron chef. I think he's been doing a great job and until tonight (so far) hasn't received enough any praise." -- kamryn94

"Not sure Donny deserved that high, what they took for passion on his face I took for a major case of the 'I am serious' and grumpies."-- garbo295874

"I think everyone is stepping up to the plate tonight. Its like a light went on and made all of the celebs think about how much they wanted to be on the dance floor next week and beyond." -- huff21960

"Thank goodness the judges gave MJH better scores than their comments implied. I was totally ready to boo and pelt the screen with whatever was nearby. (Good thing for my cat.)" -- amydurso

  • Kelly Girl Kelly Osbourne, daughter of heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne, competed admirably during Season 9 of Dancing. In Week 5, she performed a fierce Paso Doble to "Crazy Train," a song made famous by her father. Nice of Kelly to keep it all in the family, don't you think?
  • For the fourth performance of the season, the couples danced either the Argentine Tango or the Rumba. Key Features of the Argentine Tango are: • The Argentine Tango is a social dance and musical genre that originated in Buenos Aries, Argentina and moved to Uruguay, and later to the rest of the world. • There were many thousands of immigrants in the late 1800's/early 1900's lured to Argentina with the promise of jobs in the cattle and lumber industries. These included Italian, Portuguese, Slavic, and Western European peoples, mixed with populations of black slaves, South American indigenous people, Spanish people from the early conquest, and people from other South American and Caribbean countries who all brought with them their cultural history, music, and dance. The resulting melting pot created what we know today as Argentine Tango. For more details on the steps of the dance, check out our about the dances section.
