One more down, twelve to go.
After last night's battle royale, tight judges' scores meant at least half the competitors were potentially on the chopping block. Kathy and Tom had the lowest scores (18), but Chuck, Louie, Michael, Melissa, Joanna, and Kelly were all within two points of them. It really was up to the voters. But first...
Mya and Dmitry took the floor with an encore of their wildly happy and energetic Jive. That set the stage for a night of seriously impressive performances from Joss Stone, Selena Gomez and the USC Marching Band.
Throughout the night, the cuts were judicious and the audience was on edge. After 12 pairs were saved, two remained: Debi & Maks, and Kathy & Tony. Their stomachs were in their throats, it could go either way. Then Tom brought the knife down, and Kathy was cut.
Highlights of the night
British singer-songwriter Joss Stone and her sultry voice (how can she be only 22!) singing "Free Me" and "Son of a Preacher Man" accompanied by Louis van Amstel, Dmitry Chaplin, Anna Trebunskaya, and Cheryl Burke.
A video of the dancers explaining the challenges of trying to work with headstrong models, actresses, and athletes stuck in their ways. It's simple, they explained. If you can get rid of all the celebrities' bad habits, then all you have to do next is teach them to dance.
Selena Gomez from Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place sang "Falling Down" accompanied by a beautiful dance from Karina and Derek.
Macy's Stars of Dance: The USC Marching Band marched in from outside the studio, right past the audience, and filled the stage performing K.C. and the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight." They were the largest performance group ever to appear on DWTS (beating the record set the previous week by The Lion King). They were accompanied by a spectacular Step Team choreographed by Stomp the Yard's Chuck Maldonado.
Comments from He Said/She Said
"Ok, I'm a little surprised by this. (Kathy, however, didn't seem all that shocked herself.) I thought it was going to be Tom Delay. He must have lots of voters on his side!" -- Karl
