New opening, new set, new stars, new co-host, a new pro dancer, and new energy! Season 10 exploded with one of the best Season Premieres in DWTS history! We've been excited during the leadup to this season, which has a pretty fantastically and unusually diverse (and controversial) cast. We've been sneaking peeks behind the scenes watching rehearsal videos and reading Twitter feeds. Our expectations have been building up, and we've been a little worried about being let down.
Nope. The show lived up. With lots of pleasant surprises.
This first week the dances are the Viennese Waltz for the Ballroom category, or the Cha Cha Cha for the Latin dance. Whoever dances a Latin dance this week will dance Ballroom next week, and vice versa.
Out of the gate, Chad Ochocinco and Shannen Doherty both delivered impressive, complex, and confident debut dances, although the judges weren't too impressed. Erin Andrews wowed the the judges with her kicks, and Bachelor Jake Pavelka showed some suave moves, with fiancée Vienna (and jilted competitor/ex Gia) looking on from the audience.
Niecy Nash may not have scored high with the judges, but she certainly earned points with the audience, shining like a superstar in her Cha Cha. Evan Lysacek might as well have had his skates on for his performance, gliding with Anna to a 2nd place finish. Buzz Aldrin, well... let's not talk about his dancing (which wasn't bad for an 80-year-old!!) but, seriously... that's Buzz Aldrin! He's awesome! And he's having a great time up there with Ashly! And his wife is adorable! (Enough with the moonwalk jokes, though.)
Then the extremes: Nicole Scherzinger brought her Pussycat Dolls stage experience with her and scored two 9s (and a sobering 7 from Len). Poor Aiden Turner followed that with a stiff (according to the judges) and gimmicky performance that earned him an uncomfortable three 5's. Kate Gosselin gave it her all, with appreciation from the judges for not being a performer like the rest of the cast, but she's clearly got some challenges ahead of her. And Pamela Anderson surprised us all with an energetic, confident, and, of course, sexy Cha Cha Cha that brought Bruno to his feet.
The best part... no one's getting eliminated yet. Next Monday all 11 pairs will dance again, and we'll get to judge their progress... before one of them gets the axe.
Top Three Scores
Nicole & Derek: 25
Evan & Anna: 23
Erin & Maksim / Pamela & Damian: 21 [tie]
Highlights of the night:
Niecy Nash's Cha Cha Cha. She started us off by exclaiming her love of her "jiggly parts." She then came out and shook her tailfeather to "Rescue Me," twisting and prancing and working her sequins and frills. It was infectuous, and she got a standing ovation. A teary-eyed Niecy dedicated her performance "to thick girls everywhere."
Carrie Ann and Bruno giving Pamela Anderson her scores. Carrie Ann gave it her best shot replicating the slow mo Baywatch hair shaking move while giving Pam her 7. Then Bruno, without the long mane, attempted to one up her. Fun stuff.
Comments from Meg and Karl at He Said/She Said
"Nicole absolutely jammed and Derek was no slouch either! How sexy and graceful was their waltz? Beautiful! To quote Carrie Ann: 'the bar has been set for Season 10!' And this was the best routine 'out of the gate, ever!' Karl, I'll bet you right now that Nicole and Derek nab the mirror ball. And Len... he must be blind! -- Meg
"Jake, Jake, Jake. Must be quite a change having a steady date with just ONE lady for a change! ... Len wants him to stop sticking his "bum out." Nah! That was the best part of the dance!" -- Karl
