Melissa Rycroft's Thoughts on Latin Night

By Melissa Rycroft May 01, 2013

Onto Week 7! And it’s saucy Latin night! I expect some shimmies, some shakes, and a lot of sexy!! And we have a few twists tonight: Immunity will be given out, and there will be a dance off! WooHoo! Let’s get started!

Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff – Salsa – Going into a routine like this, I already expect Jacoby to excel at it. Samba is full of fun and personality – and we’ve seen loads of this from him this season! And I have to say, I loved this routine. Len said he wanted less lifts, and I disagree. Lifts are a talent, and when you can do them (and do them as well as Karina and Jacoby), I say flaunt it! Jacoby really does seem to have the whole package in this competition, and he continues to wow week after week. Great job, and great way to start Latin Night!

Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson – Rumba – Well, there was no question the Ingo was going to be able to channel the character of the Rumba – I mean, he lives for this character on General Hospital. Now as a whole, I really enjoyed this dance. I thought the setting, music, and choreography was great…but, breaking it down, I do agree with the judges. The Rumba is not only slow, it’s sensual, and silky…and Ingo was more stiff than soft.  I still thought this dance was very good, and I see Ingo improving as the weeks go on. He clearly takes the judges critiques to heart, and really works at bettering his dances every week.

Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough – Samba – Watching the rehearsal footage one might question whether Derek and Kellie would be able to pull this dance off….but I never doubted it! These two have proved they are an extremely strong duo who perform very close to perfect every week. To me, the Samba is the most fun routine performed on DWTS, and this one is one of my favorites! Kellie’s technique is amazing, the choreography is wonderful, and together, the two are magical on the dance floor. This dance well deserved those 10’s tonight!

Andy Dick & Sharna Burgess – Rumba - Umm...can we be honest for a second? Did anyone expect to see Andy Dick still in the competition in Week 7?! Biggest (and best) surprise of the season! His Rumba, however, lacked a little finesse, lacked a little hip action, and lacked a little romance...but I still absolutely adore him. Sharna and Andy’s dances are always so charming – the choreography is very different than what we normally see, and I appreciate that. Now Carrie Ann….a FIVE?!? I mean come on...I’m not sure we’ve ever seen a five in Week 7. Andy has been at the bottom of the leaderboard week after week, but has never been in the Bottom Two…and that says a lot about the fans behind him. Keep it up, Andy!!

Aly Raisman & Mark Ballas – Salsa – I have been saying for weeks that I want to see Aly embrace her youth on the dance floor and this is the Aly I like to see!! She rocked this dance! She nailed the technique and the personality, and delivered perfection. Aly and Mark are delivering at the right time in the competition. They broke through two weeks ago, and have been full steam ahead since then, and are definitely making a name for themselves in this competition! Watch out, guys!

Sean Lowe & Peta Murgatroyd – After being in the bottom two last week, these guys really need to step it up this week. And I thought they did alright. It wasn’t amazing...but it wasn’t bad at all. The Rumba is a hard dance for the men to get, simply because of the hip movements that are needed, and let’s be honest, that’s not natural for most guys! But I thought he did a great job nailing the character, and I definitely saw improvement from last week. Sean is definitely charming and talented, but he’s going to need to push it even harder to break out in the competition.

Zendaya & Val Chmerkovskiy – Paso Doble – Is there anything Zendaya can’t do...seriously?! Not that I want her to do badly, but maybe just to prove she’s human! Zendaya is just more phenomenal each week...and I’m not sure how she does it!  Tonight, I could tell the judges were holding her to a different standard, because hers was one of the best dances of the night, and they kept critiquing her chin....Hmmmm.  As long as the pair keeps doing what they’ve been doing since Week 1, these guys will be just fine!

Immunity – Well this is new and I like it! Where was this when I danced?!? I would have loved the opportunity to get immunity! And it goes to Kellie and Derek tonight simply due to having the highest cumulative points in the competition so far. Congrats! (Not that I was really worried they’d be going home tomorrow anyway....)

Dance Off Challenge – Something else that’s new! How fun (for the audience) and yet so intimidating (for the dancers!). The dancers had to prepare three routines, and be prepared to dance any of them on the spot. I must admit, I am a fan of this new format! The winners who each got three extra points added to their scores tonight are: Aly, Zandaya and Ingo. Of all the points given out tonight, those points will really help Ingo out – it moved him from the bottom of the pack to the middle…which could be huge!

Well what an interesting night! I loved the twists at the end, and it will be interesting to see if it helped anyone going into tomorrow night. Always expect the unexpected going into Tuesday nights! My guess is that Andy and Sean should really cross their fingers going into eliminations...but, heck, what do I know?! Can’t wait to see the outcome!
