Brown Family
Season 5 | Episode 5 | Aired 10/14/07

Elder Gloria Brown always wanted better for her children, her community and herself. She worked hard to move her family of four out of the projects and, in time, she became a proud homeowner. Just as her life seemed to be coming together, tragedy struck the family not once, but three times. First a flood devastated their home. Then it was destroyed by a fire. The fire was caused by kids throwing firecrackers that nearly destroyed the majority of the house. Most of the family escaped the horrific fire, including their dog, but if it were not for the bravery of Gloria's 16-year-old son, Fred, who knocked down the door that had trapped his mother, she would not be alive. As if that tragedy were not enough, following the fire their home was repeatedly robbed and stripped of everything that was left. Despite these tragedies, Gloria is committed to making her community a better place.

Together the Browns have founded a variety of creative outreach programs. Through a youth based radio show run by Gloria and her daughter, Bobbi, which celebrates the achievements of the youth in the community and offers encouragement to those who need it, the Browns have become a positive voice to teens in the community. Bobbi is also the youth president of the NAACP in Bridgeport and recruits young people in the community to be more active. In their church and community center, Gloria and her children teach the youth and adults to express themselves through dance, song and music. Additionally, Gloria founded the Bridgeport community annual festival that brings the entire community out of their homes and into the streets -- a program that makes strangers friends and neighbors family.

This family is the heart of the community and neighborhood, and they deserve the help which is coming to them. In this episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Ty and the gang head to Bridgeport to show a family that good deeds don't go unnoticed.

While Ty and the designers, local builder Gulick Associates and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home, the Brown family will go on vacation to Los Angeles, CA and Disneyland. While on their vacation, they get the Hollywood VIP treatment and even get a surprise dance lesson from Cheryl Burke and Maksim Chmerkovskiy of Dancing with the Stars, which culminates in a fun performance!

  • The Brown Family ENERGY STAR LIGHTING When you replace light bulbs or entire light fixtures in your home with ones that have earned the government's ENERGY STAR, you help preserve energy resources and reduce the risks of global warming while saving money and time buying and changing lights in your home. ENERGY STAR qualified lighting provides bright, warm light but uses about 75% less energy than standard lighting, produce 75 percent less heat, and lasts up to 10 times longer. For Example: Standard 100 watt Incandescent light bulb can be replaced by a 23-30 watt energy efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) Standard 75 watt Incandescent light bulb can be replaced by an 18-25 watt energy efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) Installing Compact Fluorescent Bulbs can save from 20 to 30 kWhs per year or more depending on size. At today's electric rates that is $4 to $6 per year per bulb. The bulbs also last 10 times longer than an incandescent so the savings there can easily pay for the cost of the bulb. To save the most energy and money, replace your highest used fixtures or the light bulbs in them with energy-efficient models. The five highest use fixtures in a home are typically the kitchen ceiling lights, the living or family room table and floor lamps, and outdoor porch or post lamp. If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. If every American home replaced their 5 most frequently used light fixtures or the bulbs in them with ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR, we would save close to $8 billion each year in energy costs, and together we would prevent the greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from nearly 10 million cars. The energy used in the average home can be responsible for more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of the average car. When you use less energy at home, you reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and help protect our environment from the risks of global climate change. Energy Efficient CFLs are available in various shapes and sizes to fit most fixtures within the home both interior and exterior.
