  • Gilyeat Family
    Season 5 | Episode 15 | Aired Feb/10/2008
Daniel Gilyeat is a decorated U.S. marine and a loving father to his children, having served not one but two tours in Iraq. During the second tour he volunteered for, he was out on a mission when a bomb hit his truck. He suffered major injuries and lost his left leg above the knee. In addition, his marriage ended and he suddenly became a single father. As with many soldiers, deployment had put a huge stress on his marriage. But despite these setbacks and personal battles, 25 days after losing his leg, Daniel was up and walking with a prosthetic leg, and inspiring other wounded soldiers by visiting them in the hospital and speaking with their families. He tries to create a normal environment for his children and to take proper care of them, but household chores are difficult because the house is not handicapped accessible; it's nearly impossible for him to get around, as all the floors are uneven and the doors are very narrow -- he often has to rely on a wheelchair. What's more, the laundry is in the basement. Daniel's trying to rebuild his life, and one of the things he desperately needs is a safe home where he can raise his kids.

Now it's up to Ty and the gang to give this American hero a place to do just that. While Ty and the designers, local builder Kevin Green Homes and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home, the Gilyeat family will go on vacation to the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles. And they're also in for a special treat when they're whisked off to San Diego for a concert and surprise meeting with Hannah Montana's Miley Cyrus.

  • Voisine Family
    Season 5 | Episode 14 | Aired Jan/27/2008
In May 2006, after four days of heavy rain, it was clear to Reynald and Casey Voisine and their four children that the water rising outside their home was far more than a puddle. Their house wasn't in a flood zone and there was a four-lane highway between their neighborhood and the river. Yet the water kept rising, making its way into the house, where it soaked the carpet and rose to the level of the electrical outlets. Reynald called the fire department for help, but was told they needed to shut the power off before the firemen would attempt a rescue for fear of electrocution. Reynald made his way to the breaker box and left his family shivering in the dark, waiting for help to arrive. While firemen were able to get down to the house, they couldn't get back out. In the end, Reynald's Dad had to drive his four-wheel drive pick-up truck up to the house so the family and stranded rescue workers could climb in back and be taken to safety.

FEMA declared their house a total loss and advised that they demolish it and apply for a loan. Thinking that FEMA knew best, Reynald had a family member in construction demolish it for free. Then the Voisines used the money in FEMA relief to haul the remains of their home to the dump. The Voisines assumed things would get better once they received the loan. But then the unexpected happened -- they were denied a loan because of poor credit resulting from Reynald's outstanding medical bills for a misdiagnosed bout with appendicitis. On top of not having a place to live, the Voisines are still paying their monthly mortgage on the property plus rent, as they're living in an apartment next door to their now vacant lot. Down but not broken, Reynald and Casey are struggling and to keep their family together. FEMA provided some rental assistance, but it's about to run out.

But now Ty and the gang will step in to help out. And while he and the designers -- Michael Moloney, Tanya McQueen, Paul DiMeo and John Littlefield -- plus local builder R.J. Moreau Communities and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding the Voisine home, the family will go on a vacation touring the Caribbean by private yacht. In addition, Country Music star Rodney Atkins helps kick off the build and sings his song, "These Are My People."

  • Chapin Family
    Season 5 | Episode 11 | Aired Dec/16/2007
Connie Chapin is a hard working single mother and avid swimmer who turned her backyard swimming pool into a much needed community resource. As a private swim instructor who started her own swim instruction company, Connie has taught over 200 kids, some who suffer from various disabilities like autism and cerebral palsy, how to swim -- a life saving skill Connie believes that all children should have. She gives the lessons in her own backyard pool so that she can be available to her children at all times. In addition, Connie and her daughters, Molly and Anna, are active in several community charities, their church and local awareness groups.

As her clientele was steadily increasing, Connie was delivered some bad news. In 2005 the city inspectors informed her that her facility was not up to code in certain areas and gave her a list of required improvements to make. For two years she has been getting extensions from the city as she has tried to make these improvements. She has held regular volunteer work days, soliciting help from clients, neighbors and members of the community, but the problems have become too great for her to fix on her own. During this time, Connie's home was also inspected and she received even more bad news: The home had been poorly constructed and was on the brink of collapse. Now Connie was facing the possibility that she might lose her business AND home at the same time.

It's time for Ty and the gang of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to provide the dream home the Chapins deserve and keep Connie's business afloat by fixing the pool. While Ty and the designers, the Building Industry Association of Washington, led by Doyle Custom Homes and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home, the Chapin family will go on vacation to Vero Beach Florida at the Disney Vacation Club.

  • Stockdale Family
    Season 5 | Episode 4 | Aired Dec/02/2007
Ryan and Karia Stockdale are high school sweethearts who married right after graduation. They now have four children, all of whom suffer from a rare yet devastating disease known as Eosinophilic Enteropathy. EE is a white blood cell disease that attacks proteins, preventing the ingestion and digestion of food. It also affects and causes diseases of the lungs, kidneys, blood, intestines and immune system.

Kayden, the healthiest Stockdale child, was born with Gastroschisis, in which the intestines are outside the body. He underwent two surgeries to repair the defect. In addition to EE, he also struggles daily with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Sensory Integration Disorder and Tourette's Syndrome. Jetty, now five, was diagnosed with EE after suffering through two years of pneumonia and various infections. Unable to eat food, he and his four-year-old sister, Baylee, are fed with the help of feeding tubes. Jetty is excited to begin kindergarten next year, but will likely need to be home-schooled due to the severity of his medical condition. Baylee's EE recently sent her to the emergency room to undergo a four-hour surgery after her feeding tube was changed incorrectly. She spent the next two weeks in ICU, fighting for her life. She still experiences infections that resulted from the surgery, and her disease continues to spread. The youngest Stockdale, two-year-old McKinnon, was born two months premature, weighing in at only three pounds. She was diagnosed with EE six months ago and doctors fear that the disease is spreading to her lungs, as it has with her brother, Jetty.

The family's father, Ryan, has his own share of health problems, having been diagnosed with Migraine Glaucoma, which recently caused his brother to go blind. Ryan has undergone multiple brain scans and spinal taps in an attempt to treat his problem. Despite his own medical problems, Ryan always puts his children first, and returned to college to study biology and immunology in the hopes of one day finding a cure for his children's disease. Karia acts as the family nurse, staying home and caring for the kids. While pregnant with McKinnon, Karia suffered a rare complication which forced her to undergo five major surgeries and 30 blood transfusions, during which she spent four months in ICU.

Despite the family's medical setbacks, Karia and Ryan stay active in their community. They created a book drive for their alma mater, Middleton High School, after the library was destroyed, and also ran an instrument drive for the school. Karia is a weekly tutor at Middleton Mill Creek Elementary and is also the head of a humanitarian group that helps those in need all over the country. She and her quilting group recently sent 40,000 quilts to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The family home only exacerbates the children's illnesses, with its coal-burning furnace causing the kids to cough constantly and break out in hives. They get their water from an indoor well and, due to the weak plumbing system, can only run one water-using appliance at a time.

The Stockdale family battles illness on a daily basis, but their love and support for each other helps them get by. Now it's up to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to pull together to give them a healthy home that will provide the whole family with a place to recover.

While Ty and the designers, local builder CBH Homes and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home in just seven days, the Stockdale family will vacation at the Hilton in Philadelphia.

  • Carter Family
    Season 5 | Episode 2 | Aired Oct/21/2007
Julie Carter suffers from a genetic disorder known as Chiari Malformation, as does her 21-year-old daughter, Jade. She fears her other two daughters may have it as well. Julie and Jade have had several brain surgeries costing over $500,000. This condition has over 85 symptoms -- which makes it very easy to misdiagnose -- and causes depression and chronic fatigue. Julie has made it her passion to spread awareness of the rare disorder and has become a hero to thousands. She writes a monthly newsletter to Chiari patients, providing them support, compassion and valuable information, which she assembles and distributes with her own money. She also started Chiari People of Montana, a support group. With her success, she was recently asked to run the first Chiari Malformation chapter in Billings. This is a bittersweet honor, since her makeshift office is hardly suitable for getting out her newsletters.

Julie is so consumed with helping others that she rarely thinks of her own living situation -- which is a refurbished chicken coup -- but the astronomical medical bills are a regular reminder that there's little chance their house will ever be fixed. From the outside their home looks like a long warehouse; the exterior walls are buckling and some of the windows are cracked, which makes it tough in the brutal Montana winter. They've made the best of the interior, but the cracks in the floor and the unusable space makes heating the place expensive. It's now up to the design team to get this family out of the chicken coop and into a healthy house, and to reward this selfless mother with a state of the art facility where she can run the Billings chapter of Chiari. While Ty and the designers, local builder Jeff Junkert Construction, Inc. and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home, the Carter family will go on vacation at the Hilton Times Square in New York City.
