How to Hustle like Jessica Huang: A 5-Step Guide

By Rose Curiel | Feb 25th, 2015

Jessica (Constance Wu) may be unemployed but there’s no doubt that she lives her life like a boss!

On the “Fajita Man” episode of Fresh Off the Boat, she kicks off her job hunt by turning to the classifieds. But don’t think she’ll bend to the will of her potential employer. Uh-uh. Jessica is a woman who knows a thing or two about getting what she wants, when she wants it.

So whether you’re also looking for a job or are just interested in leading your life like a boss, check out some of Jessica’s go-to tricks for getting what she deserves:

1. Never Settle

When Jessica comes across an ad that says “must be a team player” she merely laughs. Why? Because she’s a one-woman team who gets the job done. Duh. (Also, people annoy her.)

Jessica Starts Her Job Search|Jessica combs the classifieds for employment.|When she can no longer work at Cattleman’s Ranch, Jessica (Constance Wu) starts looking for a new job in the classifieds. But due to an unbearable heat wave—and her refusal to waste money on air conditioning—she takes her job search to the frozen food aisle of the grocery aisle. From Fresh Off the Boat, Season 1, Episode 6, "Fajita Man."

2. Dispose of Distractions

If your digs aren’t exactly ideal for job searching, find a new—preferably free—spot to make your money-making dreams come true.  Jessica, for example, takes advantage of the free air conditioning at an open house. Follow Jessica’s lead, and walk into your temporary office space like you own the place, because that’s what bosses do. Kick off your shoes, prop up your feet and authoritatively wave away anyone who gets in your way!

From Fresh Off the Boat, Season 1, Episode 6, “Fajita Man.”

3. Create Opportunities For Yourself

No job openings? No problem! People just need to see how awesome you are to realize they can’t afford not to hire you. March into your desired place of employment, state your requirements and wow them with a memorable line. We like Jessica’s: “It’s okay. You found me. Jessica is here.”

Undeterrred, Jessica informs him of her requirements for working at the store. From Fresh Off the Boat, Season 1, Episode 6, "Fajita Man."

4. Play Up Your Natural Talents

When poaching open house air conditioning leaves Jessica with a thorough knowledge of every local listing, she uses her newfound knowledge and killer negotiating skills to sell her first home—and leave the competition in the dust.

5. Revel in Your Victories

When you finally land your dream gig, make sure to take the time to celebrate! Jessica commemorates the sale of her first home with a triumphant “pimp walk” but you can rejoice with drinks, dinner or whatever else makes you feel like a baller.

Jessica's Pimp Walk|Jessica is thrilled when she finds a new calling selling homes.|Jessica (Constance Wu) dubs herself a “real estate pimp” after selling her first home, and celebrates by doing her best version of a “pimp walk.” She allows the entire family to get in on the festivities by finally letting them turn on the air conditioning—to low, of course.
