GREY'S ANATOMY - "Life During Wartime" - Cristina, Lexie and Izzie are shocked when Owen stabs live pigs for them to treat. Alex mostly just thinks it's cool, on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network." (ABC/ERIC MCCANDLESS) SANDRA OH, CHYLER LEIGH, KATHERINE HEIGL, JUSTIN CHAMBERS

Look out, Cristina. That hunky Major Owen Hunt is back, but what’s this? He’s out of the Army and he’s the new chief of trauma at Seattle Grace! But the potential for romance dies quickly when Maj…ahem, we mean Dr. Hunt presents the residents with a live, anesthetized pig for each of them, and then promptly stabs each one in the chest. (We all agree it’s pretty brutal: Many, many of you chimed in about this scene on our Grey’s message boards.) What’s he got against pigs anyway? He tells the residents it’s up to them and their interns to keep those pigs alive. Izzie, as appalled as you’d expect, bails on the whole thing, not wanting to be a part of what she considers to be a cruel experiment. That doesn’t get Izzie away from Hunt, though. She has to work with him the rest of the day while he points out all of the medical advances that were made thanks to animal research, but Izzie’s not swayed at all.

Is animal testing okay?

Izzie and Owen disagree on whether animals should be used for testing, training or study. Who do you agree with?

Depends on the tests, trainings, or studies, and what the potential risks and harmings are. I don't think it is a black and white manner --like many things.

i believe with izzie that humans and animals don't have the same effect and that those animals could have pain. i think izzie won this battle

Oh! Found the button, it is jsut not visible. Again...It is a tough call. The Question is too broad to simply say yes or No. So, with that I am going to say in general it is OK to test on animals.

I agree with animal testing, like someone already said you can't exactly do all that testing on humans. And I have to say that it's a pretty big leap to say that stem cell research is pretty much the same as slaughtering and killing people.

I agree with Owen (of course) but really... Animal testing has led to so very many important advances in human medicine and for that reason has current utility in the training of both researchers and clinicians not to mention their use in cutting edge research in clinical medicine. However, animals should always be treated humanely, out of respect for other living creatures and also to insure the quality of scientific knowledge gained from their use.

Interesting, doesn't let you post message, only reply to existing post. While not particularly pleased the way the pigs were killed on the show (which by the way has become too graphic in so many of the medical cases, I simply look away), it is probably realistic, and even more "humane" than may happen in reality. Agreeing or disagreeing though has absolutely nothing to do with which character advocates it. Given pigs are indeed slaughtered for food, I don't have an issue with animals being used for medical research, that has indeed lead to life saving techniques and medical treatment. I am not in support of animals being grossly abused for the sake of research, but we can't very well "slaughter" or "kill" humans for the same purpose. Then again, that is another controversial debate, after all don't some people advocate or condone the use of fetal tissues and fetal stem cells for the sake of research?

Hmm slightly contentious this one ... don't you think ABC? Don't think I'd like to leave my views here.. a tad too controversial me thinks. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean I have a view either way about animal testing, just that I am aware of the conflict that this type of 'discussion' can create. Even tho it's Owen .... I'll pass .. thanks

It's a tough call. It is too broad of a question to just say Yes or No. So, with that I am going to have to say yes (generally)
