After her risky surgery, Derek gives Izzie the good news. The tumor is out. Whew! Looks like we’ll get to see Izzie and Alex take that honeymoon after all. But then Izzie asks how the surgery went. A few minutes later, she asks again. Alex freaks out. But Derek explains it could be a temporary post-op condition. He wants Alex to be patient. Easier said than done.
George drops a bomb when he tells Bailey he joined the Army. Her reaction’s a lot like ours—Oh, Hell no! She and Callie team to stage an intervention. They recruit Meredith, Cristina and even Alex to help. Arizona thinks George’s decision to enlist is “awesome.” Callie boils over at this. She feels like a jerk when Arizona reveals that her brother died in Iraq because there weren’t enough medics there to save him. Maybe our George is doing the right thing.
A who man jumped in front of a bus to save a woman he didn't even know is brought into Seattle Grace. His injuries are so severe that he’s unidentifiable. He’s dubbed “John Doe.” The woman he rescued, who wouldn’t give him the time of day before, now thinks she may have found true love. She won’t leave his side.
Owen and Cristina decide to meet halfway in their relationship. Bailey also has a relationship decision to make. Her husband will divorce her if she accepts a prestigious pediatrics fellowship. She asks the Chief if she can return to general surgery. She’s turning down the fellowship not because of her husband’s ultimatum, but because she’s going to need time to be a single mom.
Alex writes down vital information on notes for Izzie. They say things like, "Derek got the whole tumor out." And "Your memory sucks." Cristina tells him that Izzie needs to rest, but Alex believes she needs to exercise her memory "before it all turns to mush." Eventually, Alex snaps. He tells Izzie, “You made me promise you that you wouldn’t live like this! So now what am I supposed to do? Smother you with a pillow?!” It’s hard for us to see Alex in so much pain.
With no time for a trip to City Hall, Der tells Mer they can marry another day. She replies, "There is no other day. Every day is like this. Every day is a crisis. I love you and I want to marry you today." Derek asks her if she has a piece of paper. She hands him a blue Post-it and he writes down some impromptu vows. "This is our wedding? A Post-it?" she asks. But Meredith signs the Post-it and Derek says, "Now I kiss the bride." Wonder if they’ll honeymoon at a stationery store.
Izzie’s still seething about her fight with Alex. They quickly realize that she actually recalls the fight. Her memory’s back! As Alex and Izzie celebrate, she collapses in his arms. She’s coding, and her DNR is still in effect. Alex doesn’t care. The Chief doesn’t either. He shouts, “Screw the DNR!” That’s right Chief, save our Izzie!
As Meredith’s checks on John Doe, he traces something on her hand. “007.” As longtime Grey’s fans, we were freaking out. Way back in Season One, a member of the intern team lost a string of patients. He earned the “007” nickname because of his “license to kill.” It’s George! John Doe is George!
As the music builds, we see a beautiful Izzie wearing the dress she wore the night Denny died. As the doors to the elevator slide open, we see George waiting for her in full Army dress uniform. Season finales like this take years off our lives!
