Around this time Thatcher Grey, the father of Lexie and Meredith, comes into the hospital coughing up blood. His liver was destroyed by years of alcohol abuse. Lexie wasn't a match for a transplant, but Meredith was. Meredith was still angry with her father and didn't want to do the surgery. Obviously Lexie didn't have the same issues him and pled with Meredith to do it. After much reflection, Meredith agreed to do the transplant but made it clear that she did it for her sister and not her father. This was yet another bonding moment for the Grey's sisters, albeit one that required a scalpel.
