Season 3:


- Meredith is having a hell of a time choosing between Derek and Finn. Ultimately she decides to do the only rational thing and date both at the same time.

- That didn't exactly work out. Meredith dumps Finn begins dating Derek.

- During a rescue mission, Meredith almost dies after being kicked into an icy river. Shortly after this near-death experience Ellis, her mother, dies.

- Thatcher, Meredith's father, comes in with the woman he married after he divorced Ellis years ago. Susan is having a case of persistent hiccups and Meredith is there to treat her. Suddenly and without warning Susan becomes septic after a couple courses of failed treatments. She is rushed into surgery and dies on the operating room table. Things seemed like they couldn't get worse until they did. Thatcher slapped Meredith and blames her for Susan's death.
