A flash sideways is not a flashback, flash-forward or an alternate timeline. It posits what would have happened if Oceanic flight 815 didn't crash on the island but instead landed in Los Angeles.

Flash Sideways Differences

1. Plane stabilizes; Rose tells Jack it's okay to let go.
The plane stabilizes after turbulence and continues safely to Los Angeles. However, in "Pilot," "The Other 48 Days" and "A Tale of Two Cities," flight 815 rips apart after the turbulence and crashes on the island.

2. Bernard returns to his seat.
Bernard returns to his seat and to Rose, but in "The Other 48 Days," Bernard is in the tail section and his row of seats is caught in tree.

3. Desmond on plane in Jack's seat.
Jack finds Desmond sitting in his row, but Desmond was never on flight 815. In "Live Together, Die Alone," Desmond is on a sailboat that is caught in a violent storm. He shipwrecks on the island and lives there for three years before 815 crashes.

4. Island and complete statue underwater.
The island and the whole statue are seen underwater, but in "Pilot," the Others and the survivors live on the island, and in "Live Together, Die Alone," only the four-toed foot remains of statue.

5. Hurley won the lottery and is the luckiest guy alive.
Hurley says he's the luckiest guy alive, but in "Numbers," Hurley thinks he is cursed because he uses the numbers to win the lottery.

Sun tells the customs agent she speaks no English, but in the first season episode "House of the Rising Sun," Sun was secretly taking English lessons so she could leave Jin at the Sydney airport, and on the island reveals to Michael that she actually can speak English.
