Everyone on the island as a story, including the selfish and sarcastic Sawyer, if that is, indeed, his real name. Okay, it's not. Sawyer is actually the name of the con man that destroyed his family when he was kid. This guy took assumed the name and vowed revenge. That explains the attitude. It also explains how he was able to trick Kate into kissing him when she thought he stole some supplies.
