This week started off with a flashback to a Young Gideon Malick and his brother Nathaniel discussing the death of their father and the necessity of seeing Daniel Whitehall, who Malick insinuates is not a true Hydra believer. In the present, Malick's ((Powers Boothe) daughter Stephanie Malick (Bethany Joy Lenz) tells her father that Hive has gathered the Hydra inner-circle in order to reveal his true self. Malick tells Stephanie that he saw his death at the hands of Hive!
At HQ, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team reacts with shock that Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) is alive and well, albeit in somewhat altered form. Coulson (Clark Gregg) gathers the team to brief for the mission. The main team will be heading to GT Agrochemical, a company in which Hive’s interest has become apparent. Meanwhile, Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) and Lincoln(Luke Mitchell) will be heading to visit an Inhuman Lincoln knows from Afterlife.
Flashback to 1970. Young Malick and Nathaniel tell an imprisoned Whitehall that they will continue the process of choosing a ‘Traveler’ to send through the portal to help bring the mythical Hydra god to Earth. Whitehall tells them their father cheated those ceremonies and that the proof lies in their father's copy of Paradise Lost.
In the present, Daisy and Lincoln go to meet the unturned, potential Inhuman James. He was kicked out of Afterlife for stealing from Jaiying. They head towards his trailer only to fall into a trap by stepping on a landmine. Daisy uses her quake powers to keep the switch compressed until they can safely escape. James grabs a gun, and Lincoln knocks him out with electricity.
Watch Daisy & James use their powers:
Meanwhile in 1970, Malick and Nathaniel learn that Whitehall was right: their father swapped the smooth white stone that would choose the ‘Traveler’ for a notched white stone during the ceremonies, making sure to feel for it to never be chosen to go through the portal. The boys throw the rock into the pond, promising to continue the tradition honestly regardless of their father's sins.
In the present, at Malick's manor, the Hydra inner circle members are confused to see Grant Ward in front of them. He reveals his tentacles, and the inner circle knows their god has returned at last.
In the Badlands, Lincoln offers James a Terrigen Crystal as an incentive to trade for whatever James stole from Jaiying. Daisy looks confused; this wasn't part of the plan. James hands over a piece of ancient Kree tech. He claims the tech had to do with the original Inhuman Alveus, who was eventually banished by a coalition of humans and Inhumans. Lincoln double-crosses James, keeping the Terrigen Crystal and the Kree tech. James tells Daisy that Lincoln almost killed his last girlfriend.
Meanwhile, the other S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents have infiltrated the agrochemical facility. They manage to get Giyera in an isolated room where May and him go toe-to-toe in an awesome badass fight that May (Ming-Na Wen) manages to barely win. They put him into a Containment Module on the Zephyr.
Watch the fight:
From the evidence they gathered during the agro-chemical company mission, Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) has figured out that Hive was destroying information about experiments related to invasive species and animals/plants programmed to resist them. From this, she deduces that Hive is a parasite that retains the memories of the bodies it takes.
In the study at Malick Manor, Hive has brought Stephanie to learn the truth about her father. In Hive's hand is the familiar notched white stone and the copy of Paradise Lost. We flashback to watch Young Malick perform a sleight of hand trick to keep the white stone, while throwing another one in the pond. In the next ceremony, Nathaniel becomes the chosen ‘Traveler’, having picked that same white notched stone, to his surprise. Malick betrayed his own brother! To teach Malick a lesson about sacrifice, Hive kisses Stephanie and the Hive parasites begin eating away at her flesh until she's dead.
Watch Hive kill Stephanie:
Back at the base, Lincoln tells Daisy about his last girlfriend. He always always felt he had a hole in his life, and he filled it with alcohol. They ended up in a car wrapped around a telephone pole. That's when Gordon showed up to bring Lincoln to Afterlife. He doesn't want anymore secrets. Daisy agrees, and she reveals that her vision (last episode, 315) showed someone on the team dying. She doesn't know when or who though...
Back on the Zephyr, Giyera breaks free from the Containment Module, incapacitates Fitz, knocks out Mack and Coulson, and uses his powers to force the ship into a free fall. May calls Daisy for help, but gets knocked unconscious by Giyera in the process. The team is out cold. Giyera has taken complete control of the Zephyr. Back on the Quinjet, Daisy and Lincoln look at each other. It's time to call in the Secret Warriors!
