With her wedding day quickly approaching, Rayna (Connie Britton) is starting to get cold feet after realizing life as Mrs. Luke Wheeler might not be all it’s cracked up to be. Between People magazine virtually sponsoring her wedding and her daughters holding secret discussions with Luke (Will Chase) about going to boarding school, Rayna tells her sister, “I don’t recognize my life anymore.” The bride-to-be calls off the wedding, telling Luke she can’t keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Looks like Luke’s destined to be one ball without a chain. (See what we did there?)
But wedding bells did ring for another county music couple, with Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) and Avery (Jonathan Jackson) tying the knot in an impromptu ceremony! After moving in with Juliette to raise their soon-to-be born baby together, Avery keeps having trouble reconciling the fact that they’re just friends, so he proposes marriage.
Meanwhile, Will (Chris Carmack) is upset when Layla (Aubrey Peeples) is hesitant to come on tour with him—something he desperately desires in order to quash surfacing media reports that he’s gay. When he sees her cozying up to Jeff Fordham (Oliver Hudson) at a party, he realizes they’ve hooked up and asks Jeff to break it off so that she’ll go on tour with him. Hot off her rejection from Jeff, Layla walks in on Will sleeping with a female reporter, and loses it. She washes down a handful of pills Jeff gave her and Will finds her floating unconscious in the pool.
Similarly, Scarlett (Clare Bowen) finds Deacon (Charles Esten) lying face down on his hotel room floor after he complains he’s not feeling well. He’s rushed to a hospital, where the doctor reveals a toxicology screen indicates he might have cancer.
Elsewhere, Gunnar (Sam Palladio) also receives some bad news when he discovers Micah (Gunnar Sizemore) is not actually his son but his nephew. It turns out his former girlfriend Kiley cheated on him with his brother ten years ago.
