Every week, Katie will blog about the extraordinary secret her boss has shared with her.
VERITABLE and VENERABLE
By being the only girl outside of her family to know Stephanie's super secret information, I've become her most trusted ally. I never really had a cool female friend before. Sure, I "experimented" with the girls from science club in college but that was different.
Up to this point most of my in-depth conversations about relationships have been internal. I constantly talk with myself about things like, will my first love start out as a professional rivalry like Lois and Clark? Will I be pitted against my man (once I get one) like Carol Ferris and The Green Lantern? Which Batman goes best with which Catwoman? You know, just the usual things your mind turns to when you think about the trials and tribulations of the heart.
Now, I have a real confidant to talk aloud with. Like, Steph and I talk about Jim being bulletproof and the effects of his crime fighting on their family. We discuss their concerns over the danger of using the powers. For example, Stephanie got in a car accident, without a car, running at like 600 miles an hour. Jim took care of her while she stayed home to recover. I decided to go visit her at home -- a lab tech-slash-friend can do that kind of thing.
We were on the brink of something big in our research. I ordered a water sample from Belem. This could have been the key to unlocking the mystery of the Powells. Stephanie felt much better physically, but the accident shook her confidence in her powers. She told me that she and Jim decided not to use their powers anymore.
Unfortunately, after I procured the water sample it landed at the Global Tech facility in Arizona (which of course was not where it belonged) 500 miles away. My obsession with our research clouded my judgment and I encouraged Stephanie to just run to Arizona despite her promise to her hubby. I tracked her the whole way and we retrieved the sample. But, Jim totally caught her.
The worst news is there's nothing special about the molecular structure of the water! It's just plain old swamp water. All we did was eliminate it as a possibility, which means we're just as clueless as when we started.
I was so focused on staying close to Steph that I undermined a promise she made to her husband. I feel awful! Does anyone know how this feels? Have you ever got in the way of a friend and one of their personal relationships? (Boyfriend, girlfriend, mom, dad, sibling, etc.)
