Once Upon a Time Recap: Merlin is Freed and Emma is Hiding Something in "Dreamcatcher"

Welcome to the official Once Upon a Time recap for Season 5, Episode 5 “Dreamcatcher” (original airdate October 25, 2015). In Camelot, many years ago, Merlin summons the Dark One, who places one of Merlin’s tears on the dagger before turning him into a tree. The wizard was weeping over the loss of the only woman he ever loved. Years later, Emma sees how this all happened through a Dreamcatcher. It helps her and Regina figure out a way to free Merlin from the tree. See how in the Magical Moments recap below.

A Young Girl’s Heartbreak: Emma stops Regina from handing over the dagger to her parents. She knows they are under some kind of spell. She knows they need to find Merlin. Regina realizes that another tear may be able to free Merlin. She instructs Emma to use the Dreamcatcher on her so that she can recall the time when her mother took Daniel’s heart. 

Regina Relives Her Heartbreak|It's like it was happening all over again.|To help Merlin break free, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) holds up a dreamcatcher for Regina (Lana Parrilla) to view. She sees a flashback of when her mother Cora took her first love's heart. Reliving the moment, she cries and Emma takes Regina's tear. From Once Upon a Time season 5 episode 5, "Dreamcatcher."

 

 

A Young Boy’s Heartbreak: Henry meets Violets father, Sir Morgan, who wants his daughter to be with someone who will become a knight. So he tries his hand at swordplay. His moms advise him to not try to change who he is to impress others. This gives Henry the idea of have a private dinner with Violet, who realizes she’s being courted.  

Henry Gets His Heart Broken|She doesn't feel the same about him.|Henry (Jared Gilmore) tries to impress Violet with a romantic dinner at Granny's. When Henry mentions to her that he thinks that it's a date, Violet tells him she just wants to be friends. From Once Upon a Time season 5 episode 5, "Dreamcatcher."

 

 

Fresh Tears: Regina’s heartache wasn’t strong enough to work in a potion. She’s healed thanks to her love for Robin Hood. Henry, on the other hand, has a freshly-broken heart. His tear will work. Arthur and his men show up just as Emma is enveloped in both white and black magic as part of the process to free Merlin. Moments later, the tree is gone.  

Merlin is Freed|Merlin goes free - and he's been waiting for Emma.|An upset Henry (Jared Gilmore) approaches Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Regina (Lana Parrilla) in tears, informing them that Violet rejected him. Regina wipes his tear with a handkerchief; his tear can help save Merlin. King Arthur and his knights arrive, but Emma is able to use the handkerchief in the potion and Merlin is freed. Betrayed: In Storybrooke, Henry rides into the middle of the block party on the found horse. Sir Morgan is impressed at how happy he’s made his daughter. Elsewhere, Regina and Robin use the Dreamcatcher to see that, in Camelot’s past, Emma took Violet’s heart in order to get Henry’s tear. She needed her to break her son’s heart. Henry happens to see all this as well. 

Henry Learns of Emma's Betrayal|Emma forced Violet to break his heart.|Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Robin (Sean Maguire) activate the dreamcatcher to find answers about what happened in Camelot. They see Henry (Jared Gilmore) and Violet, and realize it is Violet's memory. The flashback shows Emma (Jennifer Morrison) ripping out Violet’s heart and instructing her to break Henry's heart. Still the Dark One: Regina confronts Emma about what she did to Henry. If it was to free Merlin, then why is she still the Dark One? Emma doesn’t answer this. She only wants to see Henry. Unfortunately, her son doesn’t want to see her.  

What is Emma Hiding?|Emma lets it slip that they freed Merlin in Camelot.|When Emma (Jennifer Morrison) goes to see Henry (Jared Gilmore), Regina (Lana Parrilla) questions what Emma is up to and reveals that they saw what she did through the dreamcatcher. Emma insists she was doing it to protect Henry and lets it slip that they freed Merlin in Camelot. What exactly is she hiding? From Once Upon a Time season 5 episode 5, "Dreamcatcher."

 

 

Put Up a Fight: Emma wants Gold to provide her with Excalibur. She orders Merida to take him to the woods to make him a hero. It’s not going to be easy. Merida swipes something from Mr. Gold’s shop. It’s a chipped teacup. Merida uses it to taunt Gold into fighting her. The training has officially begun. Merida is pleased, but she admits they have a long way to go if he is going to take on Emma.  

Merida Teaches Gold to Fight|All a man needs is a sword and one good hand.|Merida takes Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) outside and attempts to teach him how to be a hero, but he proves to be useless with a sword. When words don't drive him, she tells him she'll have to find another way and knocks him unconscious. From Once Upon a Time season 5 episode 5, "Dreamcatcher."

The Heroes Lose Their Memories Again|They arrive back with no memory of what happened.|Sneezy and Sleepy enter Granny's Diner to find the heroes back from Fairy Tale Land six weeks later. David (Josh Dallas) and Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) come to realize they have no recollection of what happened. Emma (Jennifer Morrison) appears fully transformed into the Dark One and informs them they will be punished. From the Once Upon a Time season 5 premiere episode, "The Dark Swan."
