Daddy Dearie: Our Favorite Father-Son Moments

By Lisa Weseman | Jun 18th, 2015

Fathers and sons don't have an easy time of it in Fairy Tale Land — or Storybrooke. But despite curses, betrayals, and even having to share a body from time to time, these dads and sons share a special bond. (Though the less we say about Peter Pan's parenting skills, the better.) In honor of Father's Day, take a look at some of our favorite father-son moments from Once Upon a Time — and above, one sweet moment between grandfather and grandson.

"I will never, ever leave you"

Rumple Meets His Newborn Son|Rumplestiltskin makes a promise to his newborn son Baelfire.|After deserting the battlefield, Rumplestiltskin meets his newborn son Baelfire and promises to never, ever leave him. From Once Upon a Time episode 214, "Manhattan."

After being abandoned by his own father, Rumplestiltskin is determined to keep his son from suffering the same fate. In "Manhattan," he injures himself to get out of battle and rushes to newborn Baelfire with a promise to never, ever leave him. Even knowing that he later betrayed the vow, it's beautiful to see Rumple with a pure heart.

"It's okay. You didn't know."

Henry Finally Meets His Father|After years of thinking his father was dead, Henry learns about Neal.|After years of thinking his father was dead, Henry learns about Neal and asks to meet him. From Once Upon a Time episode 214, "Manhattan."

For years, Henry thought his father was a fire fighter who died heroically. When Henry discovers his dad is actually Neal, Emma reluctantly allows them to meet. Neal says he's sorry it took so long, and Henry responds with his usual warmth and wisdom.

"I spent a lifetime looking for you for a chance to say, 'I love you.'"

Rumple Apologizes to Baelfire|On his deathbed, Rumple tries to make amends with his son.|As Rumple lays on his deathbed, he tells his son he loves him and he's sorry for everything. From Once Upon a Time episode 216, "The Miller's Daughter."

After Rumple's cowardly act of abandoning Baelfire, he's spent the rest of his life trying to find him. When he's on his deathbed in "The Miller's Daughter," Rumple finally gets a chance to tell his son exactly what's in his heart.

"Thank you, Papa. For showing me what it is to make a true sacrifice."

Neal's Sacrifice|Neal makes a choice to save his family.|Neal sacrifices himself to save the ones he loves from The Wicked Witch. From Once Upon a Time's Season 3 episode, "Quiet Minds."

In "Quiet Minds," Neal and Rumple are trapped in the same body, and only one can survive. Neal insists that his father live since he is the only one who knows the identity of the witch determined to destroy Storybrooke. Neal thanks his father for teaching him that sacrifice is about saving the ones you love.
