Ep104 Week 4: The Duels Begin

42:31 07/13/14 Season 1 TV-PG L

It’s Week 4 and the next round of the competition has begun with The Duels. Three pairs of performers—fan-favorites from the live auditions—faced off against each other and The Wall to determine who would move on and who would go home. Host Josh Groban once again welcomed us to the Rising Star stage and, together with our experts Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris, set the scene for a dramatic night. Rocker Jesse Kinch faced Vet Tech and P.I. Will Roth. Country girl Sarah Darling squared off against west coast save Megan Tibbits. And young Lisa Punch challenged Broadway actress Alice J. Lee. • First up, Alice J. Lee took to the stage performing “Wings.” This Broadway actress divided the experts during her live audition, so she needed to step up her game if she hoped to take on Lisa Punch. And step-up, she did, bringing a ton of energy and commitment, earning a “yes” vote from all three experts and setting the bar at 69%.

• Now with the wall down, Lisa Punch had quite a tough act to follow, needing to beat 69% with her performance of “Perfect” to move on in the competition. This time, Lisa divided the experts with both Luda and Brad voting “no,” leaving her at 66% and behind The Wall.

• West coast save Megan Tibbits was up next performing “Summertime.” Megan barely made it through the live auditions, so she really needed to come out and make a statement. And make a statement, she DID! Megan switched in a guitar for her harp, but she played it just as well, and brought a sultry performance that won over all three experts and 71% of the vote!

• Now behind the wall, Sarah Darling had a steep hill to climb with her performance of “I Hope You Dance.” This time, Sarah divided the experts with both Luda and Kesha voting “no,” with Luda saying he felt like she “could have given it more.”

• The final duel of the night was set to potentially be its toughest. First up was Will Roth, who charmed everyone in Week 2, singing “Wrecking Ball”—yes, the Miley Cyrus song. With an unorthodox song choice, he definitely took a risk, and it definitely left the door open for Jesse with 57%. Luda voted “no,” but Brad and Kesha voted yes, calling his song choice “genius.”

• Jesse Kinch closed out the night singing “Whipping Post,” knowing he had to come on strong to raise the wall. But could he do it now that everyone knows he has that voice? Um, yeah. All three experts voted “yes” early and his vote tally just climbed from there to 90% and blowing the roof off of the place.

• Each week in The Duels, the west coast will save a performer who didn't win their match-up. This week, Lisa Punch was saved!
