Ep105 Week 5: The Duels, pt. 2

42:34 07/20/14 Season 1 TV-PG L

Welcome to Week 5 of ABC’s Rising Star! Our host, Josh Groban, once again welcomed us to the stage where three new pairs of fan-favorites from the live auditions would later be going head-to-head, facing off against The Wall and each other! As always, our three experts—Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris—were on-hand to give their take on each performance and had been coaching the performers throughout the week. Who moved on in the competition and who went home? As always, that was up to you, by voting live in the Rising Star App. So let’s get to it!

• Before this week’s Duels, we got to see Brad Paisley make good on his promise to welcome Sarah Darling home to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry. It was a touching homecoming for a great competitor.

• First up in The Duels was the highly-anticipated face-off between Gabrielle Nicole and Macy Kate. Gabrielle was up first and came out with a roaring performance of “River Deep Mountain High” that had the crowd on their feet and the experts voting “yes,” but she left the door open for Macy Kate with a score of 49%.

• Next up was fan-favorite Macy Kate, playing piano and taking no prisoners with a soulful performance of the Imagine Dragons hit “Demons.” While her performance split the experts with Brad voting “no,” the audience was totally behind her, giving her a score of 80%.

• Kicking off the second Duel of the night, Sonnet Simmons brought her haunting voice to “Feeling Good” and had the crowd feeling it right there with her. All three experts voted “yes” for her performance and she set the bar at 73%.

• Young April Lockhart went into her Duel performance of “Animal” with some nerves and a tough score to beat to raise that Wall. And that animal inside April came out, narrowly beating Sonnet’s score with 76% in one of the most dramatic moments of the night.

• The final Duel of the night was two handsome young men going head-to-head. First up was Austin French with a rocking performance of “I Don’t Want to Be.” Setting the highest score of the night with 81%, he put a big, big wall in front of Adam Jaymes.

• Talk about a challenge! Adam Jaymes needed to pull out everything he had in his performance of the Tom Petty classic “Free Fallin’.” He brought his heart and a guitar, but they weren’t enough to raise the wall with 53%.

• The performer who got the highest percentage of votes from the west coast and who did not win their Duel was Sonnet Simmons, who is saved and will move on to the sudden death performances!
