Behind the Scenes: A Good Shoot

It's time to go behind the scenes of Rookie Blue season two with exclusive commentary from the cast and creators of the show. This week, writer Greg Nelson and star Gregory Smith (Officer Dov Epstein) talk about driving scenes and the structure the show follows.

Gregory Smith: Officer Dov Epstein
So this is how I drive to work every day. No big deal. Except that usually I do this in a Prius.

Greg Nelson: Writer
There's a clip that made it into all of the promos right there.

Gregory Smith: Officer Dov Epstein
So these shots, even though they don't look that difficult, when you're watching them on TV, we're actually never driving the car. They have this very complicated rig which they set up, so that there are lights and cameras attached to the side of the car and the car is attached to a rig which is towing us.

Greg Nelson: Writer
So, if you're wondering why Sam Swarek can look out the window that long and then look over to Missy, that's why. He's not actually driving the car.

Gregory Smith: Officer Dov Epstein
That's right. The hardest thing about these driving scenes is actually looking like you're driving.

Greg Nelson: Writer
So in true Rookie Blue fashion, we have lots of personal moments between our cops in the first act before we really get into the heart pounding action of the police story.

Gregory Smith: Officer Dov Epstein
Is there a formula that you guys try to follow?

Greg Nelson: Writer
I don't know if we'd call it a formula but we found out what works. We like to move slowly into the procedural story and don't rush it. A lot of police shows start right off the top with something flashy, but we usually keep that moment for the end of act one, before we go to commercial. Because this is a show that has a little bit more of an emphasis on the personal and emotional stories of the characters we can do that a little bit more in act one and then a little more at the end of act six.

Gregory Smith: Officer Dov Epstein
So begin and end with the personal stuff.

Greg Nelson: Writer
Yeah, tops and tails as we call it.
