Behind the Scenes: A Little Faith

By Gregory Smith and Sherry White Sep 01, 2011

It's time to go behind the scenes of Rookie Blue season two with exclusive commentary from the cast and creators of the show. This week, star Gregory Smith (Dov Epstein) and writer Sherry White talk about emerging themes in episodes and the idea of Dov Epstein going undercover.

Gregory Smith: Officer Dov Epstein
When you're writing these episodes, is there a larger theme at hand?

Sherry White: Writer
Yes, as you can tell already, that fate is the theme in this episode. I'm not sure if that's what we started with, but sometimes you organically begin to find things and then you run with it. I can't remember what the original theme was, but certainly it ended up having to do with fate.

So you start working on the story until the theme starts to reveal itself?

Sherry White: Writer
We knew how we wanted this episode to end and what romantic beats we wanted to have happen. One of the complications was that it involved Sam and he had gone undercover. We had that technical piece to start with, and we built the story from there.

We had debated if it was going to be Dov or Chris going undercover, because we thought that Chris is a bit more naive and it could be fun to see him in that situation, but he did that in season one.

Gregory Smith: Officer Dov Epstein
Oh yeah, you've done undercover twice now.

Yeah, this was one of my favorite episodes to shoot last year. Something about Dov being undercover—I knew that it would work with his personality.
