Behind the Scenes: The Rules

By Gregory Smith and David Wellington Aug 23, 2012

It's time to go behind the scenes of Rookie Blue season three with exclusive commentary from the cast and creators of the show. This week, star Gregory Smith (Dov Epstein) talkes with Executive Producer David Wellington about making his directorial debut on this episode of Rookie Blue

Gregory Smith: Dov Epstein
David directs the majority of our episodes, is one of our Executive Producers, and is basically responsible for the look the performances and shooting of every episode of Rookie Blue. He's a big deal.

David Wellington: Executive Producer
He's kidding. Only my mom thinks that. So, there was an interesting path leading up to this. What have you directed prior to this?

Gregory Smith: Dov Epstein
Not much, I'd produced a few films and directed a documentary, but everyone took a big chance on me on this episode.

David Wellington: Executive Producer
You'll see that Greg was born as a director, fully formed. There didn't seem to be any learning curves at all. It looks like a beautifully shot episode. Look, he's acting at the same time.

Gregory Smith: Dov Epstein
I'd been working in front of the camera since I was 14 months old, but this season, David gave me scenes from each one of his episodes and let me direct them. That was really what got me up to speed prior to this. The first time I yelled action, my voice cracked and I messed up the scene. By the time we got to this episode I felt relatively confident.

David Wellington: Executive Producer
Since you were a kid, you've spent more time on a film set than anyone else here combined.

Gregory Smith: Dov Epstein
Except you.
