Welcome to the official Scandal recap for Season 5, Episode 10 “It's Hard Out Here for a General” (original airdate February 11, 2016). Six months have passed since the events of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” and it seems like everything has changed for our beloved Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). Who is keeping her bed warm at night now that she and the President have split? What does Mellie (Bellamy Young) want her help with? And what familiar face does Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) name as the new head of the NSA? Find out in this week's Gladiator Report for the midseason premeire of Scandal.

It's Gettin' Hot In Here: At dinner with her father, Olivia claims she's happy. Papa Pope doesn’t buy it. His daughter had power. She had the Oval Office. Papa Pope asks Olivia to stop by the house more often. She can’t because Jake (Scott Foley) is there. Actually, he’s not. He’s at Liv’s place to do some kissing, caressing, straddling and a few other intriguing maneuvers.

Secrets, Lies and the NSA: During a chat on the White House balcony, Fitz asks Jake to find the whistleblower at the NSA. The subject of Olivia also comes up. Both men claim they don’t talk to her, but that’s only half true. We all know Jake's been doing a little more than talking with Ms. Pope.

You Got a Friend: Abby (Darby Stanchfield) swings by Olivia’s place with a bottle of scotch. They have a discussion about the president, the work wife thing and the fact that Fitz is all alone. They both know that Olivia is afraid to call him. What advice does Abby have for her friend? Watch the clip below.

Leave a Message at the...: Time passes and Olivia finally does make the call to Fitz. Unfortunately, the president lets his secretary know that he’s unavailable to talk to her -- and Charlotte is stuck relaying the message to Olivia.

More Than Meets the Eye: OPA spends the episode trying to clear the name of the current Director of the NSA. Unfortunately, they are unsuccessful and she is asked to resign. Fitz lets the world know that he’s chosen a new NSA head. His name: Captain Jacob Hamilton Ballard. Liv quickly realizes this was all part of the plan he developed with Papa Pope, who, once again, urges his daughter to get back some real power.

The Write Stuff: Mellie Grant has written a book. Olivia gives it a read. She believes it’s a total bore. Olivia advises her to write a real book that tells the people who she really is, what she’s been through. It’ll be hard, but that’s the kind of book that will make her president. That’s the book Mellie wants to write. They’ll get started in the morning.
