Welcome to the Gladiator Report for the “Icarus” episode of Scandal. Here you’ll find highlights, quotes and more. Enjoy!
Questioning Our Leaders: There are only two people who know if Olivia’s mother’s plane was intentionally brought down. One is her father, who tends to kill people once too many questions start being asked. Hey, you can’t pick your family, right? The other is a certain former Navy pilot. So, Olivia heads off to the White House. She has some questions for the President of the United States.
The Story of Icarus: In Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of Daedalus, the guy who built the Labyrinth, a place more difficult to exit than IKEA. Father also built son a set of wax wings so his boy could fly high in the sky without so much as a learner’s permit. Icarus soared a little too close to the sun, his wings melted and he dropped into the ocean. That’s how a subdivision of the Mediterranean, the Icarian Sea, got its name. So, Cyrus was a little off when he thought it was a story about “winged mistresses.” As far as we know, Icarus never slept with any prominent world leaders.
Sex as a Weapon: It’s the title of an underappreciated Pat Benatar tune from her 1985 album Seven the Hard Way. It’s also the message Congresswoman Josie Marcus is sending out to Governor Reston, newsman James Novak, his producers and anyone who thinks The Feminine Mystique is nothing more than a blue X-Men character. Listen to her Cyrus Beene-worthy rant:
Looking for Mr. Wright: The scene where Harrison refused to go against his loyalty to Liv started out with a funny little pun from Cyrus, but ended in a mildly alarming way. At least Harrison got a nice White House souvenir out of the meeting.
GladiQuotes: Below are some of the top lines from "Icarus." Let us know which ones were your favorites and, by all means, pop in any that we forgot in the comments section.
Huck: Last night we told her there was a good chance the president killed her mother. Is she okay? Probably not.
Harrison: Stupid super spies.
Cyrus: This is a Greek tragedy in the making… winged mistresses flying too close to the sun.
Olivia: I can’t work for you.
Abby: We believe in winning.
Olivia: I have so many questions I want to ask you, but I’m afraid you’ll kill my friends if I do, so… you know.
James: You’re a shameless monster.
Cyrus: Who loves you dearly!
Olivia: You’re too… nice.
Cyrus: Mr. Wright. Ah, that’s funny.
Charlie: What up, Robin?
Fitz: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Don’t Let the Door Hit You: Fitz shows up at Olivia’s place to let her know that she could come on the campaign trail with him. He says there’s nothing she could do that he wouldn’t forgive. He wonders why she can’t do the same for him. Well, there’s a very good reason for that as you can see here:
