Debunking Food Myths

By ABC Nov 03, 2011

Has anyone ever told you that if you swallow gum it will live in your stomach for seven years?  Or that diet soda is really healthy for you?  The Chew’s resident health expert Daphne Oz is here to tell you which
of these sayings are true and which ones are just outrageous food myths.

Full-Fat Dairy:  How Unhealthy Is It?

Most people think that full-fat dairy is bad.  The truth is that it’s fine to treat yourself to full-fat dairy in moderation.  The protein and fat fill you up and keep you feeling full longer.  So enjoy a scoop of that full-fat ice cream but not the whole container!

Diet Soda Keeps You Slim

Studies have shown that drinking diet soda can actually contribute to weight gain.  The artificial sweeteners in these drinks are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, and that super sweet taste can be addictive.

Also, the body expects a certain amount of sugar to create energy and when it doesn’t get it you tend to compensate by overeating.  A treat once in awhile is fine but avoid consistent drinking.  When you get a craving, try a lime rickey which is made up of simple syrup, fruit juice and seltzer.

Trail Mix:  The Nutritious Snack?

We’ve all been there you’re standing in front of the vending machine at work, looking for a snack.  You see chips, candy bars but go with trail mix because it’s a low-fat, low calorie healthy snack.

This is not always true.  Many varieties of trail mix are loaded with calories and fat and very little nutritional value.  Try making your own version instead.  Daphne made one with almonds, popcorn, dried
fruits and seeds.  It’s packed with nutrients and is less expensive than the store bought version.

How Long Does It Take to Digest Gum?

Most of you have heard the myth that if you swallow gum, it will live in your stomach for seven years.  Don’t worry, it’s not true!  While you shouldn’t make a habit of swallowing your gum, it will be digested and out of your system in a day or two.  So you’re safe to enjoy your gum!
