More to Chew On: Movie Theater Popcorn

By The Chew Crew Feb 20, 2013

With the Oscars only four days away, The Chew Crew cannot stop thinking about movie snacks. Since popcorn is the unofficial snack of movie theaters around the country, here’s a little trivia about the most popular concession stand choice.

Researchers examined hundreds of movie theaters belonging to the nation’s top 3 movie theater chains and found the average small popcorn to contain 700 calories! Did we mention that this calorie count excludes added butter? If popcorn is supposed to be a relatively guilt-free pick, then how is such a high analysis possible?

According to the report, the “movie theater popcorn taste” comes from frying popcorn in saturated fats, meaning that even without adding extra butter, this go-to snack comes loaded with the equivalent of eight pumps of butter! According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, one small popcorn contains THREE DAYS worth of the recommended saturated fat. And this is before you’ve topped your popcorn with those irresistible cookie dough bites or crunchy chocolate candies for that perfect salty sweet snack…

What are you favorite movie theater snacks? What do you plan to serve your guests at your Oscar viewing party? Will popcorn make the cut?
