More to Chew On: Stop Stressing

  • By The Chew Crew
Stress levels for Americans have taken a downward turn across the USA, except for young adults, whose stress is higher than the national norm. A recently released survey from American Psychological Association says that young adults, between 18 and 33-years-old, are more stressed than any other generation.  52% of these Millennials say that their stress regularly keeps them up at night and the top cause of stress for young folk is work.

There are a couple of easy ways to get stress out of your life.  Firstly, you can eat more chocolate.  This delicious treat is high in flavonoids and phenethylamine, which have mood enhancing and relaxing properties. The darker the chocolate the better it is at reducing your stress levels, so look for chocolate that is 70% cacao or higher.

Secondly, you should laugh more!  Laughter fires up and then cools down your stress response while also increasing your heart rate and blood pressure. The result is a good, relaxed feeling.

Finally, try taking a fifteen minute walk.  Regular physical activity relieves both mental and physical tension in the body. You generate endorphins and have more energy.  Aim for at least a 15-minute walk daily.
