More to Chew On: Crazy Cheese Laws

  • By The Chew Crew

Is cheese a staple in your diet? According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average American eats 31 POUNDS of cheese per year! Believe it or not, but that’s nearly triple the amount of cheese Americans were eating 40 years ago! Since some folks are pretty crazy about their cheese, they have enacted some outrageous food laws all revolving around – you guessed it – cheese!

1. In Wisconsin, it’s illegal to serve apple pie in a restaurant without cheese! No wonder people from Wisconsin are called cheeseheads…

2. In Houston, Texas, it’s illegal to sell Limburger cheese on Sundays. Looking for more Texas trivia? The Encyclopedia Britannica is banned in the Lone Star State because it has a formula for making beer at home.

3. In South Dakota, it’s illegal to lie down and fall asleep in a cheese factory. We bet dreaming about cheese is still allowed!
