More to Chew On: Banning Unhealthy Snacks

  • By The Chew Crew

With back-to-school time right around the corner, get ready to start thinking about packing healthy snacks for your kids. So before planning to trade your gummy bears for your friend’s ginger snaps, get the whole scoop on the latest changes:

Here’s what you should know: The USDA recently passed new legislation that bans unhealthy snacks from vending machines and snack bars. This is the first nutritional overhaul of school snacks in more than 30 years, and schools must meet these new standards by July 1, 2013.

What does this mean? Say so long to candy bars, doughnuts, soda, and sugary sports drinks.

How about birthdays?! Have no fear… children will still be allowed to bring in any snacks from home that they choose, and parents can continue to deliver treats to the classroom for birthday celebrations.

Is this crazy? Tell us what you think. Should we take away the bad food choices, or should we teach kids how to make good decisions?
