More to Chew On: The Food Stamp Program

  • By The Chew Crew

The US House of Represeentatives passed a bill that would cut billions of dollars from the food stamp program if enacted into law. Here’s everything you need to know:

So, what is the bill all about? The bill would cut $40 billion from the food stamp program over the next 10 years, restrict people’s eligibility for food stamps, and allow states to require food stamp recipients to be tested for drugs. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), nearly four million people would be removed from the program under the bill starting next year.

What are people saying about this? Republicans claim the bill was needed because the $80 billion a year food stamp program had grown out of control. Democrats and critics, however, say the cuts would plunge millions into poverty and fall disproportionately on children.
