More to Chew On: Last Bites From Around the Country

Today we’re celebrating the freezer.  Many of us associate frozen food with gross leftovers and T.V. dinners.  But that doesn't have to be the case - the freezer is your friend.
 
In honor of this celebration we’re taking at look at some food debates. First off is chili. Historically the International Chili Society did not support the dish with beans.  However, this week for the first time ever during the cook-off they admitted a chili with beans.  Whichever way you like it, chili makes a great dish even after it’s frozen.
 
Another great food debate is between frozen veggies and fresh veggies.  As winter approaches, fresh produce is limited in much of the country which makes frozen a great alternative. Fruits and vegetables chosen for freezing tend to be processed at their peak ripeness, a time when – as a general rule – they are the most nutrient packed. So all in all they’re a great alternative in the cold winter months.
 
In other food news, Nigella Lawson got some criticism from a surprising source this week.  The Daily Mail set up a kitchen with a typical Italian nonna and her new cookbook Nigellisima.  The book is inspired by Italian cooking but it didn’t go over so well with the traditional granny.  In one specific recipe where the Nigella instructs users to add “four sachets of squid ink in a pasta dish for two [the nonna replied] ‘Is she mad?”  Check out the rest of the article here.
 
Finally, McDonald’s is defending itself, at least in Canada, saying its burgers are all beef.  As part of a new campaign, VP Jeff Kroll walks through a processing plant and shows consumers at home how their burgers are made.  Find out more about this on Eater.
