7 Valentine’s Day Love Lessons from The Middle

By Rose Curiel Jan 21, 2015

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, the pressure is on to up the romance in our lives. Thankfully, The Middle offers us a few tied-and-true tips when it comes to finding and maintaining love. So, whether or you’re in a relationship or looking to snag someone this Valentine's Day, learn from The Heck’s successes—and failures—in love!

1. Keep Chivalry Alive and Well
Want that second date? Or perhaps that goodnight kiss? Then you should probably avoid Brick’s (Atticus Shaffer) mistake of ditching his date, and instead embrace some good ole fashion chivalry. Sure, you might not like “brunch” or “muting the game,” but as Frankie (Patricia Heaton) and Mike (Neil Flynn) explain to Brick, doing things you don’t want to do for your partner’s sake can go a long way.

They teach him the valuable lesson of doing things he will not want to do. From The Middle's Episode 605 "Halloween V" ABC WEDNESDAYS 8|7c.

2. Love’s a Sure Thing When You’re Self-Assured
Embarrass yourself in front of that special someone? Heed Frankie’s advice to Axl (Charlie McDermott) and own the mistakes you make. There’s nothing more attractive than someone who oozes confidence—and nothing less attractive than someone who hides from their missteps like a coward.

3. Know When to Say You’re Sorry
When Sue (Eden Sher) discovers that Darrin (John Gammon) has given her the same necklace he’s given his ex-girlfriend, she blows up at him, and the two end up mad at one another. But once Darrin realizes he probably shouldn’t have recycled his gift idea, and Sue rethinks her reaction, the two apologize to one another and are able to move on. The lesson? Right your wrongs. (Also, throwing in a grand gesture when you’re apologizing—like, say, surprising your sweetheart with a room bursting with balloons—doesn’t hurt either!)

4. Weigh Your Word Play
With the advent of online dating and texting, the pressure is higher than ever to compose the perfect message to the object of your affection. Don’t follow in Brick’s footsteps and blame your delay in replying to a message on a bout of diarrhea. Do follow Axl’s advice and adopt a casual-cool tone.

 5. Don’t Forget Your Friends
Once you find love, don’t become a one-dimensional bore who drones on and on about their significant other. No one—including your sweetheart—finds repetitive conversation attractive. Plus, if you break up with your love, you will have alienated the very people you will need the most: your friends!

Sue Keeps Thinking of Derrick|He is someone who has never apologized.|Sue can't stop talking or thinking about Derrick Glossner even after Brad points it out to her.

6. Embrace Your Competitive Side
If you have your eye on a popular gal or guy, it’s essential that you step up your game. In an effort to impress his crush, for instance, Axl hits the books to impress her during a study date. You could also always borrow another move from Axl and take out the competition by “accidentally” spilling a drink on them. Hey, all’s fair in love and war, right?

7. Keep the Romance Alive
If you’re in a long-term relationship, it’s a good idea to shake things up every once in a while in order to keep things fresh. Take Frankie and Mike who find themselves spending the night in a new and unexpected locale one evening, which results in Frankie learning something surprising about their relationship. But like Mr. and Mrs. Heck, you should also make it a point to relive and celebrate the history of your epic love story with the occasional trip down memory lane!
