Whoopi Goldberg gave two Syrian refugee families an experience in their new country they'll never forget: a tour of New York.
"Even a small act of kindness can make a huge difference," Goldberg said.
Luke Miller, the owner of Real New York Tours, was disheartened by the crisis in Syria and wanted to help. With the help of Kristy Powers, head of operations at the company, they reached out to ICNA Relief to provide free New York City tours for Syrian refugees settling in the tri-state area. They raised money to tour over 150 refugees, providing transportation and lunch. Goldberg thought it was the perfect opportunity to help out.
Along the tour, the two families took a boat ride to the Statue of Liberty, saw dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History — and bumped into the director of the Hayden Planetarium, astrophysicist extraordinaire Neil deGrasse Tyson.
"Everyone started as an immigrant – unless you're a Native American, you came here — your people came here!" Goldberg said. "Everybody has a dream. Stomping on other people's dreams because you're afraid ... if you find there's a Syrian family in your neighborhood — go and introduce yourself! Find out if there's a conversation to be had."
