Character Biography

Katie Otto is a confident, unapologetic wife and mother of three, who raises her flawed family in the wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut, filled with 'perfect' mommies and their 'perfect' offspring. Katie is in her forties, a woman of a certain size, intelligent, very funny, warm and loving. She has a marketing degree from Duke, where she met her husband, Greg Otto, whom she is happily married to despite them being total opposites: Greg is fastidious and liked by all in the community, where Katie is just trying to hold it together and mostly hates the community—the feeling is mutual. Together, they have three kids: teenagers Taylor and Oliver, and 7-year-old Anna-Kat, who was an accident ("I forgot to take my pill because my first two kids broke my brain…"). While Katie struggles to guide Taylor and Oliver into not buying too much into the Westport way of life, she spends most of her time on her clear favorite, Anna-Kat, whose struggle with OCD is the family's reason for moving to Westport in the first place, where the school has the best special needs instructor around. Katie lives in a house she describes as a teardown, and as a larger women in a town of relentlessly skinny women, she knows a thing or two about being different and not allowing it to impact your self-esteem.
