S18 E07 Week 7: Latin Night

04/28/14 | TV-PG | CC

Grammy® winner Ricky Martin kicked off the night with a show-stopping opening performance of his 2014 World Cup song “Vida” accompanied by the Pro Dancers. He then joined Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba as a guest judge for the evening. Each couple performed an individual dance to a song with a Latin theme. Additionally, the competition included two Latin inspired team dances. At the end of the night, one couple faced elimination.

• The night got off to a spicy start with the help of Grammy winner Ricky Martin and his new song “Vida” along with some dancing from the pros. Then it was time for hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews to officially welcome us to Latin Night, the sexiest night of the year!

• It was an emotional week for Amy Purdy whose personal relationship was affecting her rehearsals with partner Derek Hough. We got to see Derek’s softer—and sillier—side as he cheered her up and Derek’s clowning around must have worked, because their Rumba was hot, hot, hot with Len proclaiming “you lit my fire out there!”

• Next up was the combustible combo of James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd who seem to be flirting as much as they’re rehearsing. That chemistry was very evident on the dance floor where the only part of their performance that dropped were pieces of their wardrobe! We agree with Bruno’s comment, “that was filthy, that was dirty and I loved it!”

• Danica McKellar had a really rough rehearsal week, actually fracturing a rib during a lift with partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy. But despite that serious injury, she continued on and the two of them took to the ballroom with a hot salsa routine. But that fractured rib did take its toll, with Carrie Ann commenting that “the injury stifled the movement.”

• Coming back from a break, Tom and Erin let us know that Amy actually injured her back during her dance with Derek, and they would keep us updated about her status throughout the evening. Unfortunately she had to go to the hospital and get checked out and couldn’t perform in the night’s Team Dance.

• Erin put it to a vote—would pro Tony Dovolani dance with his shirt on or off? Unsurprisingly, Tony’s abs made their third appearance of the season during a sassy Argentine tango with NeNe Leakes. NeNe was all attitude in her performance, but her technique still left the judges wanting more.

• Gold medalist Charlie White and his pro partner Sharna Burgess were feeling that competitive edge as they rehearsed this week, determined to shoot for that elusive perfect score from the judges. But as the time came to perform, a few technical slips were enough to cost them and their chase for 10s continues.

• After a solid performance in the previous week, Candace Cameron Bure and partner Mark Ballas decided it was time to confront the confidence issues that had been holding her back so far. They even consulted a sports psychologist for some advice. And it seemed to pay off with an exciting Argentine tango even Len could cheer for!

• Coming off of a perfect score for their last dance, Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy had a rough week of bumps and bruises during rehearsals for their salsa. You would never have guessed it from watching their performance, though! The judges were blown away, giving them the highest individual score of the night—39 out of 40!

• Latin Night was also the night of the fan-favorite Team Dances and, after the previous show, team captains Meryl Davis and Charlie White picked their teammates. Charlie’s TEAM VIDA featured him and Sharna, NeNe and Tony, and James and Peta. The performance was a true crowd-pleaser and the judges loved the energy, but some technical missteps earned them a total of 35, which was added to each of their individuals scores for the week.

• With Amy out of action due to an injury, we were shown TEAM LOCA’s dress rehearsal footage featuring Amy and Derek, Danica and Val, Meryl and Maks and Candace and Mark. And that footage? It was scintillating! Carrie Ann called it “the tightest team dance [she’d] ever seen” and the judges rewarded the team with 39 out of 40 points to add to their individual scores.

• Unfortunately, Latin Night had to come to an end and so too did one team’s dancing journey. This time, it was NeNe and Tony who had to say goodbye.
