S18 E08 Week 8: Abby Lee Miller & Dance Duels

05/05/14 | TV-PG | CC

Dance Moms' Abby Lee Miller joined judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli for the night and some sparks flew as the outspoken guest judge gave some tough critiques. The couples performed the first ever Celebrity Dance Duels, where the pros stepped off of the dance floor to leave their celebrity partners for a portion of their performance. Pro Mark Ballas performed his new single "Get My Name" live. Another couple faced elimination.

• The night got started with pro dancer Mark Ballas pulling double duty: taking a turn behind the microphone to sing his new single “Get My Name” and ALSO dancing to it along with some of our favorite pros!

• Hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews welcomed the night’s guest judge, reality TV personality Abby Lee Miller. She promised to be outspoken and she did not disappoint.

• The first dance of the night went to Charlie White and Sharna Burgess, who were coming off of a disappointing attempt at a perfect score last week. A visit from Charlie’s mom put the spring back in his quickstep during rehearsals and that energy helped carry them through a dazzling performance. Bruno proclaimed that Charlie “was off the starting block like a thoroughbred at The Kentucky Derby” and he wasn’t alone in his praise, with the judges awarding Charlie and Sharna their first perfect score!

• Up next were Danica McKellar and Valentin Chmerkovskiy in a fierce tango showing that, despite Danica’s fractured rib, they’re still able to put together a top-notch performance. Carrie Anne was glowing afterward, telling Danica that she was “so refined” and that she “hit every shape perfectly.”

• Things got dramatic in the ballroom when Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy performed a rumba that Meryl called “very emotionally raw” and she was not wrong. Speaking of drama, there was some between Maks and guest judge Abby Lee Miller when he told Erin that he “really [doesn’t] care for anything she has to say.”

• The battle of the sexes continued as Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas performed a much more light-hearted interpretation of a tempestuous relationship in their foxtrot. Len called it “joyful to watch” and we have to agree.

• After a close call last week and spending this past week at the bottom of the leaderboard, James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd were feeling the pressure during rehearsals. But their graceful Viennese waltz didn’t show a hint of that. Even so, the judges had some critiques for James’ posture in-hold that he’d need to work on—if he made it through the night.

• Paralympian Amy Purdy had to leave the show early last time because of a back injury and she spent a good portion of her rehearsal time recovering. But in an incredible display of resilience and grit, she and partner Derek Hough performed an Argentine tango that Bruno called “spellbinding.” The result? Amy and Derek’s first perfect score!

• For the first Celebrity Dance Duel of the night, Meryl & Maks teamed up with Danica & Val for a tricky samba. While the brothers Chmerkovskiy were a little rough on their partners during rehearsals, a quick visit from their grandmother got them in line. The performance was solid and all of the judges acknowledged how difficult the samba can be, especially to keep synchronous, but there was definitely some room left for improvement.

• The next Celebrity Dance Duel featured Charlie & Sharna teamed with Candace & Mark for a beautiful contemporary routine. During rehearsals, Charlie and Candace really hit it off and discovered just how great their lifts could be, so they created a solo section of the performance where Candace’s feet never touched the dance floor. The judges were impressed, giving the group 38 out of 40.

• For the final Celebrity Dance Duel James & Peta partnered with Amy & Derek for a jive that was so fun to watch, it was infectious. While rehearsals might have been challenging, the four of them pulled off a wonderful performance that left the judges raving and wanting more!

• With another night of performances coming to a close, the time came to find out which couple would be heading home. In what may have been the toughest elimination of the season so far, Danica & Val were sent home.
